Te Akau Ellerslie Preview

14 January, 2018

Te Akau New Zealand has four horses racing on Sunday 14 January at Ellerslie.

As on Saturday 13 January the conditions were: cloudy and Dead4, rail out 9 metres. Showers race day morning.

1.27 p.m. R2 1 Avantage (2 f Fastnet Rock - Asavant) - Opie Bosson; made it two from two when winning the NZB Insurance Pearl Series 2YO 800 metres by six lengths on 28 October at Riccarton, having impressed on the same course three weeks earlier. Freshened since, she resumes off 78 days in the $22,500 NZB Insurance Pearl Series 2YO 1200 metres (eligible for the $8,000 bonus). A class package, she will be looking to race well in preparation for the $1m Karaka Million (Listed, 1200m) on 27 January at Ellerslie.

1.27 p.m. R2 5 Pinot Grey (2 f Burgundy - Streaming) - Cameron Lammas; hardly turned a hair when winning impressively on debut in the 2YO 1000 metres on 9 November at Otaki, and followed with a notable fourth to subsequent Eclipse Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) winner Melt (Iffraaj) on 25 November at Pukekohe. Freshened to resume of 50 days in the $22,500 NZB Insurance Pearl Series 2YO 1200 metres (eligible for the $8,000 bonus), she too is prepping for the Karaka Million.

2.02 p.m. R3 4 Nucleonic (3 f Burgundy - Mexican Rose) - Opie Bosson; pushed clear from a trailing position and quickened well to win the Rating 65 1200 metres on 16 December at Awapuni, with McNab aboard, and from barrier one contests the $25,000 3YO 1200 metres. Although facing a stronger field, she has won two of her four starts, narrowly beaten in another, and boasts the right attributes to rate a major player.

2.37 p.m. R4 2 Mongolianconqueror (3 g Ocean Park - Queen Rania) - Opie Bosson; followed a deserved victory at his third start, on 20 October over 1600 metres at Tauranga, coming off a freshen-up with a big effort to win the Rating 65 1400 metres on 27 December at New Plymouth. Ideally drawn (3) in the $25,000 3YO 1500 metres, he rises in class and makes his first course attempt but appears capable of absorbing both. Fixed odds: $5.00 & $1.50.
