Te Akau Ellerslie Preview

Date: 13 Jan 2019

Te Akau New Zealand has seven horses racing on Sunday 13 January at Ellerslie.

As on Saturday 12 January the conditions were: fine and Dead5, rail out 7.5 metres. Showers forecast Saturday night and Sunday.

12.39 p.m. R1 1 Sword of Osman(3 g Savabeel - Bunyah) - Opie Bosson; freshened after the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) in November, having won the Sarten Memorial (Gr. 2, 1400m) at his previous start, he resumes off 64 days in the $25,000 3YO 1200 metres. A Group One and Group Three winning two-year-old, including the Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) here, clearly highest rated sees him carrying 60.5kgs yet he appears very competitive in a field of five. Fixed odds: $1.55 & $1.02.

2.24 p.m. R4 1 Yourdeel(2 g Dundeel - Miss Zapper) - Matt Cameron; could hardly have been more impressive winning by over five lengths on debut in the 2YO 1200 metres on 15 December at Te Rapa, having finished strongly in a trial over 1000 metres prior. Natural progression from the victory should see him competitive again in the $22,500 2YO 1200 metres, provided he handles right-handed going equally as well. Fixed odds: $3.60 & $1.28.

2.24 p.m. R4 3 Challa(2 c Dissident - Are There Any) - Michael Coleman; was particularly unlucky not to break through when recording three short margin seconds from as many starts during a spring campaign at Riccarton, most recently in the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on 17 November, and freshened to resume off 57 days in the $22,500 2YO 1200 metres. He showed genuine qualities and should go well from barrier three. Fixed odds: $31.00 & $4.80.

2.24 p.m. R4 6 Probabeel(2 f Savabeel - Far Fetched) - Opie Bosson; impressed the rider when winning at the trials in October at Waipa, beating subsequent stakes winner Bavella (Snitzel), and debuted with a very game performance for second in the 2YO 1000 metres on 10 November at Te Rapa. She followed up with an impressive four and a half length win here on 1 December in the Maiden 2YO 1100 metres, with Bosson aboard, looking special in the process, and warrants favouritism in the $22,500 2YO 1200 metres. Fixed odds: $1.80 & $1.12.

3.34 p.m. R6 3 In A Twinkling(3 g Fastnet Rock - Moment in Time) - Michael Coleman; ran a very good race for fourth in the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m), but unable to wind up on Heavy10 here Boxing Day in the Uncle Remus Stakes (Listed, 1400m). From barrier six in the $25,000 3YO 1600 metres, he could finish strongly out of midfield to rate a top four chance. Fixed odds: $8.00 & $1.95.

3.34 p.m. R6 5 Prise De Fer(3 g Savabeel - Foiled) - Opie Bosson; clocked the best final 600m (34.2) to finish second on debut at Avondale, and followed with a commanding two length win on 18 December in the Maiden 1400 metres at Ruakaka, ridden by Bosson in both. Up in class to contest the $25,000 3YO 1600 metres, he looks competitive from barrier two. Fixed odds: $4.30 & $1.34.

4.09 p.m. R7 2 Mazzuro(4 g Rip Van Winkle - Mini Pearl) - Opie Bosson; showed benefit from his fresh-up run here over 1500 metres in December, closing solidly from last to finish fourth in the Rating 82 1600 metres on 3 January at Te Aroha. From a classy family, he campaigned very well through the autumn in Melbourne, winning twice to 2100 metres and can be amongst it with the right trip from a wide draw (14) in a strong field for the $35,000 Rating 72 2100 metres.
