Te Akau Friday Update

David writes:

Gee, it is such a busy time of the year here at Te Akau Stud.

This week, we have had owners throughout the day, every day to see their new yearlings and we have just finished weaning all the foals. Another unit of lambs has been sold and two units of steers left this week for the works. To top it all off, we have been busy selling the shares in our yearlings - but the long hours are certainly worth it when you see the results that we are getting!

How exciting was it last Saturday to win four races in three different countries!?

It was an amazing thrill to win another Group 1 race for Brendan and Jo Lindsay - WOW what a mare Probabeel is!! Not to mention that Probabeel's win was Group 1 number 40 for our trainer, Jamie Richards - what an achievement for someone who is only 31.

We were also proud to win a race at Ellerslie with Holyhead for the China Horse Club here in New Zealand as well as for past Chairman of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Matt Goodson with Time Lord in Singapore.

This has to be one of the favourite times of the year for me, as every Saturday from now on is filled with great racing. I will be going to Matamata tomorrow (Saturday) for a great day of racing, so if you are in the Waikato area, I really encourage you to attend.  It is the premier meeting in the country tomorrow - yes even with a Group 1 at Otaki.

I am looking forward to seeing On The Bubbles, our Karaka 2YO Million winner step out in the Group 3 Matamata Slipper for 2YO colts and geldings tomorrow.  He has again drawn wide, but I don't think he would know a decent draw if he fell over it. "Bolli" has won every race from an outside, or close to outside, barrier.  We have another smart 2YO in this race - Sword of State who I bought at the Magic Million's Sale is already stakes' placed and he will be very competitive too.  Craving lines up in the Group 2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes as well so it will be a busy day for the team - not just at Matamata but also at Otaki!

Speaking of which - Avantage has arrived in the Manawatu for her Group 1 assignment tomorrow at Otaki and our stable jockey Opie Bosson will be travelling south for the ride. What an incredible mare she is - how many horses in the world have won Group 1 races at 1200m, 1400m and 2000m? She really is some racehorse and she is shooting for Group 1 win No.8 tomorrow.

I was lucky enough to purchase Avantage at Karaka for $210,000. She was the last yearling to sell that year, and it is a well-known fact that here at Te Akau the last to sell is usually one of the most successful racehorses!

I had two very special guests for lunch at Te Akau Stud on Wednesday - All Blacks Centre, Anton Lienert-Brown and fellow Chiefs' player, fullback, Shaun Stevenson. They both thoroughly enjoyed being taken around the farm and seeing all our yearlings. One horse in particular that caught their eye was the colt by All Too Hard, out of All Day Baby. They liked him so much that they have both taken a share in him!

This colt is a really good type and was bred by my very good friend, Ben Kwok.

Well done guys, you have come into a real ripper!

Another colt that has really impressed me since the sale is Lot 239, our Contributer colt out of Alpha Dame - pictured below. As you can see he's a stunner. I drive past his paddock two to three times a day and really do believe he is developing into a real Karaka Million type of colt.  He has really thrived since arriving at the farm.  I rate him very highly

A 10% share would be about $15,000 plus GST and 5% share would be about $7,500 plus GST - that includes all sales' expenses at cost, insurance, Karaka Million entry, transport post sale.

You can find out more information about this classy colt here -

If you are keen on this colt - who we have called Primo - do let Karyn know over the weekend as we will be advertising him nationwide next week - his shares will not last long!

One thing I really look forward to every week is the fantastic racing publication Raceform. It arrives in the mail on my desk every Thursday morning, despite the fields only being confirmed the day before. If you don't currently receive it - I would highly recommend you sign up! It is too easy to sunscribe - simply phone 0800 504 704.  Editor Liz Whelan and the team are doing an outstanding job with this!

Good luck to all our owners who have runners this weekend - hopefully we will see you all tomorrow!

GO THE TANGERINE!!
