Te Akau Hawera Midweek Preview
Date: 25 Apr 2023
Te Akau Racing has 11 horses entered on Wednesday 26 April at Hawera.
Weather: fine, track: Soft6, rail: true. 3mls rain and strong wind forecast Wednesday.
2:02 p.m. R4 8 Treaty of Paris (3 g Tavistock - Echezeaux) - Rylee Sheehan (am); he continued his good form running the fastest last 600m (35.0) for third in the Maiden 2200 metres on 10 April at Woodville, and contests the $14,000 Maiden 2100 metres, an event for amateur riders. Expected to go well again, he provides the Te Akau track work and trials' rider Rylee Sheehan with his first race day mount.
2:40 p.m. R5 9 Angel Wings (3 f Heroic Valour - Gowana) - Michael McNab; she fought well for second to stable-mate Merlotti (Burgundy) in the Maiden 1200 metres on 18 March at Tauranga, and did the same in a duel for a close second in the Maiden 3YO 1200 metres on 10 April at Woodville. She is racing solidly and rates a top three chance from barrier one in the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres.
2:40 p.m. R5 10 Rightly So (3 f El Roca - So It Begins) - Jess Allen (a4); she continued her solid form line with a second in the Maiden 1100 metres on 10 April at Woodville, and also contests the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres. Aided by weight relief to 54kg, she rates a top three chance.
3:15 p.m. R6 3 Baronet (3 g Contributer - Alpha Dame) - Craig Grylls; he kept up strong gallop to win a trial on 11 April at Avondale, and resumes in the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres. He recorded a promising debut victory over 1200 metres in September at Matamata, and appears capable of a bold fresh-up effort - one of two for the stable contesting the 1200m event.
3:15 p.m. R6 7 Stella Splendida (3 f Zoustar - Scintillula) - Michael McNab; she was held together for a close third in trial on 11 April at Avondale, and likewise resumes in the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres. She recorded a promising debut victory over 1200 metres in September at Taupo, however was caught wide in the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m), and rates a top three chance fresh-up.
3:50 p.m. R7 6 Hero Worship (4 g Xtravagant - Idol) - Jessica Allen (a4); he stormed home to win the Rating 65 1400 metres on 29 March at Matamata, and made up plenty for fourth when providing the Te Akau apprentice with her first race day ride (two winners since) in the Rating 75 1200 metres last Saturday at Te Rapa. Likely to be ridden quietly from the outside gate (7), he meets a small field and enjoys the weight relief to 52.5kg which aids his top three prospects in the $14,000 Rating 75 1400 metres.
4:25 p.m. R8 5 Trieste (4 m Tivaci - Domani Oro) - Michael McNab; she closed strongly for fourth in the Maiden 1400 metres on 8 March at Taupo, but was without favours running home in the Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1400 metres on 29 March at Matamata. Handily drawn (5) in the $14,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1600 metres, she rates a top three chance if appreciative of the course at her first attempt.
4:25 p.m. R8 13 Star In The Sky (3 f Savabeel - Pikari Star) - Joe Kamaruddin (a); she circled from beyond midfield with a strong finish for third in the Rating 60 1400 metres on 10 April at Woodville, and also contests the $14,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1600 metres (eligible $13,000 bonus). Aided by a handy draw (2) she should race well again.
4:55 p.m. R9 4 Luxembourg (4 g Burgundy - Miss Daphne) - Johnathan Parkes; he fought hard after leading for third when resuming in the Rating 60 1400 metres on 10 April at Woodville, and contests the $14,000 Rating 60 1600 metres. He won his Maiden over 1200 metres here last May, and should give a strong showing if he emulates his fresh-up performance.
4:55 p.m. R9 5 Rip Van Gogh (5 g Rip Van Winkle - On the Move) - Joe Kamaruddin (a); he ran the fastest last 600m (33.9) for second in the Jumpers' High-weight 1600 metres on 10 April at Woodville, and contests the $14,000 Rating 60 1600 metres. He has posted solid efforts this time in, and is ideally drawn (3) to continue the trend.
4:55 p.m. R9 10 Caravella (3 f Caravaggio - Highland Lights) - Michael McNab; she rounded off solidly for a close second in the Rating 60 1400 metres on 10 April at Woodville, and she too contests the $14,000 Rating 60 1600 metres. She does however require luck from her wide gate (11), but tries hard and is capable of a competitive performance.
