Te Akau Racing has 18 horses entered on Saturday 17 April: Te Rapa, Hastings, and Royal Randwick (Sydney).

 

Te Rapa:

Weather: overcast, track: Slow7, rail: out 2 metres. Showers forecast.

 

1.20 p.m. R3 1 Sophisticardo  (2 g Burgundy - Glamorous Girl) - Joe Kamaruddin (a3); won stylishly on debut before a notable performance for fourth to On the Bubbles (Brazen Beau) in the Karaka Million 2YO (Restricted Listed, 1200m), enabling a stable first four. He finished strongly for fourth once angled clear in the straight at the trials on 6 April at Ellerslie, and rates a top three chance, with weight relief to 54.5kg, in the $22,500 2YO 1100 metres. Fixed odds: $7.00 & $2.50.

1.20 p.m. R3 5 Medal  (2 c Savabeel - Gold Rocks) - Danielle Johnson; quickened to an advantage and kept up a strong gallop to win when trialling on 6 April at Ellerslie, and debuts in the $22,500 2YO 1100 metres. A brother to Gold Fever, the sixth Te Akau filly to win the Matamata Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m), finishing third in both the Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) and Eclipse Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m), he rates a top three chance from barrier three. Fixed odds: $7.50 & $2.60.

1.55 p.m. R4 7 Campionessa  (3 f Contributer - Bella Contributer) - Danielle Johnson; made it two from two with a three-length victory over 1400 metres in December at Matamata, and never off the bridle when cruising into second at the trials on 23 March at Cambridge. Resuming in the $25,000 3YO 1200 metres, she rates a top three chance. Fixed odds: $7.00 & $2.30.

2.30 p.m. R5 2 Top Brass  (5 g Epaulette - Highlight) - Joe Kamaruddin (a3); recorded back-to-back wins for the second time when proving too strong in the Rating 74 1200 metres on 25 November at Te Rapa, with Kamaruddin aboard. The winner of four from seven, he galloped solidly when trialling on 6 April at Ellerslie, and rates a top three chance, with weight relief to 58kg, in the $27,500 Rating 74 1200 metres. Fixed odds: $4.20 & $1.80.

3.05 p.m. R6 4 The Mighty Spar  (3 g Savabeel - O'Dianne) - Troy Harris; ran on well in two starts before powering home to win the Maiden 1400 metres on 31 March at Matamata. He rates a top three chance up in grade for the $22,500 Rating 65 1400 metres. Fixed odds: $3.80 & $1.70.

3.40 p.m. R7 1 Avantage  (5 m Fastnet Rock - Asavant) - Danielle Johnson; made it eight Group Ones when defending her title in the Weight-For-Age Classic (Gr. 1, 1600m) on 27 February at Otaki, clocking a smart 1:34.0, before bowing to stable-mate Melody Belle (Commands) in the Bonecrusher NZ Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) on Auckland Cup Day (13 March) at Ellerslie. She has since quickened boldly into second when trialling on 31 March at Matamata. The winner of two from three on the course, including the BCD Sprint (Gr. 1, 1400m) in February, she warrants favouritism in the $200,000 Fibre Fresh NZ Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m). Fixed odds: $1.70 & $1.10.

4.53 p.m. R9 1 Aotea Lad (4 g Savabeel - Corsage) - Joe Kamaruddin (a3); had good lead-up form before winning the Rating 74 1600 metres on 24 March at Pukekohe, with Kamaruddin aboard. Remaining in the same grade for the $27,500 Rating 74 1600 metres, but up two kilos to carry 59.5kg, he should go well from barrier two. Fixed odds: $6.00 & $2.25.

4.53 p.m. R9 8 Mazzuro  (6 g Rip Van Winkle - Mini Pearl) - Danielle Johnson; spelled after a spring campaign from the Te Akau base at Riccarton. He rounded off well when trialling on 16 March at Cambridge, and resumes in the $27,500 Rating 74 1600 metres, A handy prospect in the staying ranks, and course winner over 2100 metres, he is capable of a bold fresh-up effort. Fixed odds: $15.00 & $4.50.

1.05 p.m. R2 8 Feelin' Fancy  (4 m Rip Van Winkle - Frivolous) - Johnathan Parkes; came from second last to win the Maiden 1400 metres on 17 February at Te Aroha, and stepped in grade finishing second in the Rating 65 1600 metres on 10 March at Otaki. Given time (38 days), she rates a top three chance from barrier one in the $22,500 Rating 65 1600 metres. Fixed odds: $6.50 & $2.40.

1.42 p.m. R3 4 Spectrier  (2 g Vadamos - Selenus) - Johnathan Parkes; closed late with a good gallop for fourth when trialling on 6 April at Ellerslie, and debuts in the $22,500 2YO 1300 metres. By internationally bred and performed racehorse Vadamos, the son of top-class stallion Monsun who has sired three Melbourne Cup (Gr. 1, 3200m) winners in the past seven years. His dam, Selenus (Pentire), won five times from 1600m - 2200m. Fixed odds: $10.00 & $2.70.

1.42 p.m. R3 13 The Perfect Pink  (2 f Savabeel - The Solitaire) - Danielle Hirini; tracked home nicely without much room for fourth when trialling on 6 April at Ellerslie, and debuts in the $22,500 2YO 1300 metres. By Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m) winning Champion Sire Savabeel (Zabeel), whose progeny have topped $100m prize money, she is from impressive stakes' winner The Solitaire (O'Reilly) (10 wins), and ideally drawn in barrier one. Fixed odds: $13.00 & $3.40.

2.13 p.m. R4 5 Excitonic  (4 g Savabeel - Bint Piavonic) - Johnathan Parkes; was not far away in close quarters when trialling on 6 April at Ellerslie, and resumes in the $22,500 Rating 65 1200 metres. An emphatic Maiden winner over 1400 metres, he gets his chance to recapture form from barrier five. Fixed odds: $18.00 & $3.60.

2.13 p.m. R4 7 Pazienza  (3 f Written Tycoon - Gypsy Chimes) - Ashvin Goindasamy (a1); impressed winning on debut as a two-year-old over 1000 metres in March at Trentham, and returned home after a spring campaign in Australia. She made good ground in the straight for third when trialling on 6 April at Ellerslie, and rates a top three chance from barrier one in the $22,500 Rating 65 1200 metres. Fixed odds: $2.70 & $1.25.

2.48 p.m. R5 7 Romantic Lady  (4 m Power - Romantic Time) - Lisa Allpress; continued her excellent form finishing third in the Open 1400 metres here on 3 March at Hastings, and notable fourth in the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1200m) on Oaks Day (20 March) at Trentham. She worked home solidly without pressure to finish close up when trialling on 6 April at Ellerslie, and rates a top three chance in the $50,000 Power Turf Sprint (Listed, 1200m). Fixed odds: $4.60 & $1.90.

4.35 p.m. R8 12 Secret Amour  (4 m Niagara - My Secret) - Johnathan Parkes; had a very good first campaign, scoring an authoritative win over 1400 metres and included three seconds at Ellerslie. She quickened well to win when resuming in the Rating 65 1200 metres on 27 March at Tauranga, and rates a top three chance from barrier six in the $27,500 Rating 74 1400 metres. Fixed odds: $3.60 & $1.65.

3.50 p.m. (NZ time) R5 2 Amarelinha  (3 f Savabeel - Hopscotch) - Opie Bosson; became the sixth NZB Filly of the Year for Te Akau after a conclusive victory in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m) on 20 March at Trentham. She has since raced clear in the straight to win easily when trialling on 6 April at Ellerslie, and rates a top three chance in the $1m The Star Australian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m). 6.30 p.m. (NZ time) R9 1 Probabeel (4 m Savabeel - Far Fetched) - Kerrin McEvoy; resumed with a brilliant victory in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) and recorded her third Group One in Australia, with a gigantic effort in the Futurity Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m), on 20 February, both at Caulfield. She was unsuited on rain-affected footing in the All-Star Mile (1600m) on 13 March at Moonee Valley, displayed her readiness with a super trial win on 9 April, and rates a top three chance in the $1m Moet & Chandon Queen of the Turf Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m). 7.10 p.m. (NZ time) R10 3 Entriviere (4 m Tavistock - Marcey's Belt) - James McDonald; made it five from six when racing clear to win the King's Plate (Gr. 3, 1200m) on Derby Day (7 March) at Ellerslie, and contests the $300,000 TAB Sapphire Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m). She seems versatile when it comes to footing, runs time, and has the ability to measure up. NZ TAB fixed odds: $4.20 & $1.80.
