Te Akau

Welcome to Day 25 of our feature - as our world around us changes indelibly, we want to bring some smiles and sunshine every day - yes a small distraction but it does everyone good to be able to smile when times are tough.

A precocious child is very clever, mature or good at something, often in a way that you usually only expect to find in a grown up. Often these youngsters can be gifted.

Meet one of our more precocious "babies" this year - our Exceed and Excel filly out of Addie Lane.

Known simply as "Addie" - perhaps after her namesake pictured below, Addie reminds us of one of those gifted children. The traits you see in humans sometimes can be mirrored in their equine counterparts.

Individual thought - a gifted youngsters often has that independent thought-process. It's a unique type of intelligence when they can solve problems and think for themselves. They know how to take what they learn from one area and incorporate it into another with ease.

Curious nature - some youngsters want to relax and enjoy the world as is. Others wish to explore and learn and curiosity is a wonderful attribute. Curiosity means they automatically gravitate toward learning.

Exceptional focus - it's hard to produce results without attention. Focus is the key to success. It embodies drive, ambition, a desire to succeed - something human and equines both strive for. The ability to learn quickly and retain a lot of information.

Addie has been a star pupil during her breaking in - she is showing high intelligence and a desire to get on with the job. She's a thinker and you cam almost see her mind ticking over, working everything out in a fast, intuitive fashion.

Last week she headed to Matamata for her first taste of stable life. We can't wait to see what the future holds for this lass who indeed may live up to her breeding and 'exceed and excel'.

Our Exceed and Excel - Addie Lane filly was purchased by David Ellis in January at Gold Coast Yearling Sale 2020, from the draft of Segenhoe Stud.

She is somewhat of a rarity, with few fillies by Exceed and Excel (Danehill) offered for sale, as breeders tend to keep them.

By a son of Danehill (Danzig), the most successful sire of all time (349 stakes winners), Australian Champion Sire Exceed and Excel is third on the Australian General Sires List for stakes winners this season. He is one of the best stallions in Australia, closing in on 2000 winners worldwide and over 160 stakes winners, including 15 individual Group One winners.

She is the first foal from Addie Lane, a winner over 1200 metres from only five starts in Australia, by the sire of out and out champion Winx (Street Cry). Winx won 37 races and NZ$28.1 million in prize money. Addie Lane is a sister to Sabatini (Street Cry), who recorded five wins from 1100m to 1400m including the Quezette Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m), at her third start, Kevin Hayes Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m), Armanasco Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m), and third in the 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m), all at Caulfield.

By a Champion Sire, out of a mare by a Champion Sire, she carries a cross of immortal stallion Northern Dancer, on both sides in the pedigree of Exceed and Excel and the dam side of Addie Lane.
