"Te Akau Lockdown Love"
16 April, 2020
Welcome to Day 16 of our feature - as our world around us changes indelibly, we want to bring some smiles and sunshine every day - yes a small distraction but it does everyone good to be able to smile when times are tough.
"Thorns may hurt you,
friends desert you,
sunlight turn to fog;
but you're never friendless ever,
if you have a dog."
Some things just fill your heart without trying.
And yes, some of our heroes here at Te Akau Stud DO wear capes!
Meet another of our Te Akau Stud lockdown (permanent) residents - Kane. This seven year old bundle of joy (and allergies) is a golden retriever adopted from the Blind Foundation.
Kane came to Te Akau Stud as an 18 month old, having been top of his class in training to be a guide dog. Sadly for him, and gloriously for us, he had to be taken off the programme due to his numerous allergies - particularly to the metal harness that guide dogs need to wear. Now that's a slight problem!
There is nothing in the world quite like adopting one of these pups - no pee-ing, poo-ing, wee-ing or chew-ing - Kane arrived with impeccable manners and the most doggone handsomest face you have ever clapped eyes on - okay it's all in the eyes of the beholder, but he certainly is our own George Clooney of the canine world.

Known variously as Kane, Kane-star, Kane, Big Boy and Kane Hayes (after son in law Hamish who fell in love with the dog as well as our daughter!) - he's huge of heart and filled with fun.

Not the best guard dog ( well he was trained to be a guide dog and that also starts with 'g') he's generous and ridiculously loving, with every visitor being offered affectionate licks, or having to share the couch if he decides to get closer.
Favourite things in the whole wide world - food, treats, food, treats, walks, his Mum - oh and did we say food, and treats??
A wise man once said - "the world would be a nicer place if everyone had the ability to love as unconditionally as a dog."
Once met by Kane, he will never forget you. And we doubt you, him.
