"Te Akau Lockdown Love"

19 April, 2020

Welcome to Day 19 of our feature - as our world around us changes indelibly, we want to bring some smiles and sunshine every day - yes a small distraction but it does everyone good to be able to smile when times are tough.

She is our own "black beauty" - though not a horse.

Our gorgeous Evie - Evie-line, Evie-Wonder, Evie-licious or simply Eeeeeeeee-vie! Our little granddaughter Lucia manages to call her Affie.

Evie is another of Te Akau Stud's (permanent) lockdown residents - and guess what - yes she too started life as a cape-wearing hero!

The fourth adoptee by Karyn from the Blind Foundation - this black labrador arrived at Te Akau Stud in December 2016 aged just 16 months - the very best Christmas present anyone could wish for. In a strange twist of fate, she left the puppy training programme to be a guide dog due to her own eye issues - but luckily they don't affect her as a pet.

Her final 'school report' or 'leaving notes' said of her - "Evie is a bright, funny dog with heaps of character who loves to play. She can be headstrong at times, but responds well to the whistle. She is very affectionate, and loves being around people."

EVIE BEFORE HER 'RETIREMENT' TO TE AKAU STUD

Karyn says Evie is "my heartbeat by my feet" - Karyn's shadow, this beautiful girl, with a soul deeper than her eyes, has one of the most remarkable natures you could wish for - her kind eyes are the dead give away for what lies beneath her shiny skin.

Patient, intelligent, gentle, funny - loving, loyal - her love is unconditional.

Evie's breakfast time regime has to be seen to be believed - she literally levitates non-stop from the time she rises until her bowl is delievered. Her energy knows no bounds - she's probably even give Eliza McCartney a run for her money!!

Dogs are many things to different people - working dogs, show dogs, guard dogs, companion dogs ...

They are children's best friends, partners in mischief, sport companions, - these special animals come in all shapes and sizes, all colours and coats.

The enrich our lives - and to ours: Kane, Molly and Evie - it's a life journey we share together, because there is no greater privilege than giving a dog a home filled with love!
