"Te Akau Lockdown Love"

Date: 31 Mar 2020

Welcome to Day 3 of our new daily feature - as our world around us changes indelibly, we want to bring some smiles and sunshine every day - yes a small distraction but it does everyone good to be able to smile when times are tough.

Last week we welcome home our beautiful girl Luminous (4m Reliable Man - Keenly) who we know as by the stable-name or nickname "Zahra" - this is Arabic and means "beautiful, bright, shining and brilliant".

We always put a lot of thought into our stable names (our owners of course come up with the racing names). We want our horse's nicknames to really mean something special as these are the names our horses know and recognise in their daily lives.

Karyn was VERY keen for David to buy this mare from the Ready to Run Sale at Karaka - and was over the moon when she passed all her veterinary examinations with flying colours. Shares in her sold in about half an hour.

Luminous (Zahra) has really repaid the great love her owners (including Karyn) have for her. Not sure how much the team "loves her in winter ha ha when she looks like she is wearing a mud-beauty pack!!

What is remarkable is, as she has matured, she has developed what we call her "Beauty spots" almost like black freckles and her "eyeliner" the black around her eyes has also become more distinguished.

In summer she almost glows pink as her summer coast shows more of her skin - naturally there is a lot of care taken around her being "sun-safe" slip, slop, slap!!

Luminous is not only one of the most identifiable racehorses in New Zealand, but also a stakes placed athlete that sent a message of more to come with an impressive last start victory at Tauranga.

Te Akau principal David Ellis had
previously been under-bidder on two white yearlings, both out of The Opera
House, which sold for $450,000 and $510,000, but landed a good one in Luminous.

Luminous is from the talented
race mare Keenly (Keeninsky), winner of three races up to 2200 metres. She has a high-quality depth of
stallions on her dam side, with second dam Marlena being by Champion sire
Zabeel (Sir Tristram), who in turn is from Success Express mare Vargas
Diamond. Success Express is also the dam sire of five-time Champion Sire
Savabeel.

Beautifully named and certainly unusual being white all over, Luminous is inbred to some of the most influential stallions of all-time: Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector, Special, Nureyev, and Sir Ivor.
