Te Akau Matamata Double - Pisco Sour Sweet

Poised in her preliminary, Pisco Sour (3 f I Am Invincible - Refreshing, by Stratum) demolished her rivals in the $12,000 Matamata Club Maiden 1200 metres on 20 April at Matamata.

Second in both starts since a freshen-up, most recently after a mid-race check in a corresponding event on 30 March at Matamata, Pisco Sour was ridden purposefully by Michael McNab to lead, travelled like a winner, and charged clear in the straight to win easing down by six and three-quarter lengths.

A filly with good trial form before debuting last October, Pisco Sour raced well in three starts before a let-up and had always given the indication she could win at any tick of the clock.

“She's a filly with a lovely pedigree and it was a really good win,” said Mark Walker, claiming his sixth winner including two Group One's since resuming as Te Akau trainer on 1 April.

“It's always great to win a race for Brent and Cherry (Taylor), and Brent's mother Faith, who are terrific supporters of the New Zealand racing industry. They're great breeders of good horses and this looks like another filly that will eventually end up in their broodmare band.

“It was certainly an impressive win and we can look forward with a fair amount of confidence.”

On Soft5 footing, Pisco Sour ran 1200 metres in a polished 1:10.3, last 600m in 34.6, and firmed into favouritism paying $2.70 & $1.20 on the TAB tote.

From the family of Redoute's Choice (Danehill), with her third dam Monsoon Wedding a sister to the Champion Sire, Pisco Sour was offered as a yearling by New Zealand breeder James Chapman under the Jamieson Park banner at 2020 Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Nice bodied with an action to match, Pisco Sour carries the Trelawney Stud colours of owners Brent & Cherry Taylor and Faith Taylor.

“It was very timely to get our first win again with Mark (Walker), after him being away training for ten years in Singapore,” said Brent Taylor.

“We're very happy with that performance. She showed a bit as a two-year-old, but had a few issues and we're very pleased to see that she's expressed herself in very dominant fashion. Hopefully she recovers well off the run and goes on to bigger and better things.

“We had to outlay quite a lot for her, but she's a purchase for the farm for racing and breeding. She's got a lovely pedigree, being by I Am Invincible out of a very strong family.

“She's a very nice filly that just looked like she would take time to mature and we hope that next season she can step right up to the best.

“She's probably going to be a 1200m-1400m type, but might squeeze a mile, and a bit like Vamos Bebe and some of the other I Am Invincible mares that look like they're going to be sprinter/milers.

“She's won particularly well today which is very pleasing.”
