Date: 12 May 2022
Te Akau Racing has 20 horses entered on Friday 13 May at Matamata.
Weather: fine, track: Soft5, rail: true. No rain forecast.
Note the early start!!
10:51 a.m. R1 10 Avondalay (3 f Redoute's Choice - Miss Maren) - Michael McNab; ran the fastest last 600m (34.7) when getting home from last on debut in a Maiden 1215 metres on 9 April at Rotorua, and kept closing for third here in a Pearl Series 1400 metres on 20 April. Ideally drawn (5), she rates a top three chance in the $12,000 Maiden 1600 metres. Dam Miss Maren (Stravinsky), was a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed, and won eight times 1400m - 2000m.
11:22 a.m. R2 1 Espionage (3 g Savabeel - Bayrock) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); kept finding the line for fourth when resuming in a Maiden 3YO 1200 metres on 30 March and was a good second in a Maiden 1400 metres on 20 April, both at Matamata. He rates a top three prospect in the $12,000 Maiden 1600 metres.
11:53 a.m. R3 3 She's A Showoff (3 f Showcasing - Que Sera) - Kozzi Asano (a); drew the outside (10) yet ran the fastest final 600m (34.5) when circling from last to finish second fresh-up in a Maiden 3YO 1230 metres on 29 April at Rotorua. A trial winner here, she requires luck from another wide draw in the $12,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1200 metres (eligible $11,500 bonus) - one of five contestants for the stable.
11:53 a.m. R3 4 Ifyourample (3 f Iffraaj - More than Adequate) - Lisa Allpress; continued here notable form when finishing strongly for third in a Maiden 1400 metres on 6 January at Rotorua. She sustained her run to finish close up when trialling on 26 April at Cambridge (poly-track), and resumes in the $12,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1200 metres (eligible $11,500 bonus). She should race well with decent trip from barrier eight.
11:53 a.m. R3 5 Savito (3 f Savabeel - Suavito) - Craig Grylls; made ground very well in the straight for fourth in a trial on 19 April at Taupo, and finished strongly for third when debuting in the same race as She's A Showoff (above) on 29 April at Rotorua. She rates a top three contender if further improved for the $12,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1200 metres, but is another that requires luck from awkward draw (12). Dam Sauvito (Thorn Park) won both the Futurity Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m) and C F Orr Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m) at Caulfield.
11:53 a.m. R3 11 Dame County (3 f Contributer - Dame Mapperley) - Ryan Elliot; drew to handy advantage at the 200m and kept giving to win a trial on 19 April at Taupo, and debuts in the $12,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1200 metres. She is ideally drawn (2) to race well.
11:53 a.m. R3 12 Hayate (3 f Maurice - Vamoose) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); was held up in the trail and quickened through late for third in a trial on 26 April at Cambridge (poly-track), and also debuts in the $12,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1200 metres (eligible $11,500 bonus). It appears an ideal starting point on her home track, while bred on her dam side to get further.
12:24 p.m. R4 5 Malborough Bay (2 g Darci Brahma - Spin ‘N Grin) - Lisa Allpress; quickened into a gap on straightening and won with a well-timed finish in a trial on 19 April at Taupo, and debuts in the $12,000 Maiden 2YO 1200 metres. She is from a Group 2 winning and Group 1 placed filly who was trained by Mark Walker. The stable has great affinity with family including Group 1 placed three-quarter sister Burgundy Belle (Burgundy). With any luck from the draw (11), look for him getting home strongly - the first of a stable duo in the event.
12:24 p.m. R4 12 Breathtaking (2 f Holy Roman Emperor - Breath) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); led before finishing sixth to subsequent Group 1 winning stable-mate Maven Belle (Burgundy) when debuting over 1000 metres in January at Te Aroha. She led and was never off the bridle to win a trial on 19 April at Taupo, and resumes in the $12,000 Maiden 2YO 1200 metres. She should race well if able to negate her wide draw.
12:58 p.m. R5 1 Eridor (3 g Telperion - Fille de France) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); was claimed on the line after leading fresh-up in a Maiden 3YO 1200 metres on 30 March but didn't show quite the same zest in a Maiden 1200 metres on 20 April, both at Matamata. He receives the opportunity to bounce back with the blinkers going on in the $12,000 Maiden 1200 metres - a race with a stable trio stepping out.
12:58 p.m. R5 2 Asperitas (3 g Shooting to Win - Sehaab) - Lisa Allpress; kept finding for fourth in a Te Akau first four, won by subsequent winner Highborn (Savabeel), over 1200 metres here in January and was spelled after finishing sixth at Ruakaka. He finished strongly for second in a trial on 26 April at Cambridge (poly-track), but requires luck from (yet another) wide draw (16) fresh-up in the $12,000 Maiden 1200 metres.
12:58 p.m. R5 3 Ready to Drink (3 g Burgundy - Corsage) - Craig Grylls; ran on well for fifth to subsequent winner Jimmy Kirk (Jimmy Choux) when debuting in a Maiden 1215 metres on 9 April at Rotorua. He has since won a trial on 3 May at Cambridge (poly-track), but requires luck from another tough draw (13) for the team in the $12,000 Maiden 1200 metres.
1:35 p.m. R6 5 Devoted (4 g Contributer - Mapmaker) - Lisa Allpress; placed to 2100 metres during his previous campaign, he finished solidly for third in a trial on 26 April at Cambridge (poly-track). A winner on debut over 1600 metres, he requires luck from the tricky draw (12) fresh-up in the $12,000 Maiden 1400 metres - the first of two for trainer Mark Walker.
1:35 p.m. R6 8 I'm Not Bossy (3 f Jimmy Choux - Keffiya) - Craig Grylls; produced an undeniable finish to win a Maiden 1400 metres here on 20 April, running the fastest last 600m (34.9), and steps up in the $12,000 Maiden 1400 metres. From the ace draw, with the winning jockey staying with her, she rates a top three chance.
2:08 p.m. R7 9 Madame Moet (4 m Iffraaj - Champagne Katie) - Michael McNab; had good form before being back and then wide in a Pearl Series Rating 65 Fillies & Mares 1400 metres here on 20 April, and contests the $12,000 Maiden 1400 metres. A course winner over 1600 metres in January, she can bounce back.
2:46 p.m. R8 1 Hero Worship(3 g Xtravagant - Idol) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); was narrowly beaten after working from wide gate to lead when resuming in Maiden 1215 metres on 9 April at Rotorua, and fought well for second to impressive winning stable-mate Pisco Sour (I Am Invincible) in Maiden 1200 metres here on 20 April. He should race well again from barrier five in $12,000 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres - a race that features a stable trio.
2:46 p.m. R8 2 Prismatic (3 g Savabeel - Kaleidoscope) - Lisa Allpress; freshened following a third placing in a Maiden 1600 metres on 9 February at Ruakaka, and made plenty of ground for second in a trial on 26 April at Cambridge (poly-track). Solid in three starts, he shapes to find the line from barrier nine in the $12,000 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres.
2:46 p.m. R8 7 Boomer (3 g Iffraaj - Kate Cross) - Ryan Elliot; spelled after his debut in January, he held his spot for second at the trials on 26 April at Cambridge (poly-track). Half-brother to Group 1 winning mare Consensus (Postponed), a multiple Group winner, he requires luck from his wide draw (12) in the $12,000 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres.
3:21 p.m. R9 2 Aromatic (5 m Sacred Falls - Vickezzchardonnay) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); came from last with big run for fourth (fastest last 600m: 33.9) when resuming in a Rating 74 1200 metres on 30 April at Te Rapa, and contests the $12,000 Rating 74 1200 metres. She carries plenty (59.5kgs) and has drawn out (10), but she is a course winner at her only attempt and has a record that cannot be overlooked.
3:56 p.m. R10 3 The Mighty Spar (4 g Savabeel - O'Dianne) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); continued his good form when finishing third in a Rating 74 1560 metres on 29 April at Rotorua, and steps up in the $12,000 Rating 74 2000 metres. A winner over 1600 metres in January, he should race well again if appreciative of the trip.
