Te Akau Matamata Midweek Preview

Te Akau Racing has 10 horses entered on Wednesday 7 September at Matamata.

Weather: fine, track: Heavy10, rail: out 7 metres. No rain forecast.

12:30 p.m. R1 3 Trieste (4 m Tivaci - Domani Oro) - Opie Bosson; ran home well from last for fourth to stable-mate Savito (Savabeel) when resuming in the Maiden Fillies & Mares 1300 metres on 24 August at Taupo, and steps up in the $14,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1600 metres. She was freshened after finishing third here on Heavy10 in the Maiden 3YO 1600 metres on 8 June, so is likely to prove competitive while preferring better ground.

1:05 p.m. R2 5 Believe It Or Not (3 g Star Witness - Believe You Me) - Opie Bosson; won both preparatory trials before closing well from last for fifth when resuming here in the Maiden 1050 metres on 28 August. Although another that's likely to appreciate better footing, he has shown the capacity to handle heavy going and rates a top three chance in the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres.

1:40 p.m. R3 1 Hero Worship (4 g Xtravagant - Idol) - Troy Harris; sustained a strong gallop to win a trial on Heavy10 at Avondale, 16 August, but was unable to quicken on a Heavy10 track when resuming here in the Maiden 1050 metres on 28 August. Twice runner-up on Soft5, he contests the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres - one of two in the event for the stable.

1:40 p.m. R3 2 Espionage (4 g Savabeel - Bayrock) - Opie Bosson; produced a couple of notable performances before spelling in May, and galloped home strongly for a close second in a trial on 23 August at Cambridge (poly-track). Resuming in the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres, he may prefer better footing.

2:15 p.m. R4 1 Prismatic (4 g Savabeel - Kaleidoscope) - Opie Bosson; picked a path from last with a strong finish for second in the Maiden 3YO 1200 metres here on 13 May, continuing his solid three-year-old campaign. He has trialled twice in preparation to resume in the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres, however he too may prefer better footing - another race featuring a stable duo.

2:15 p.m. R4 5 Sternland (4 m Astern - Landslide) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); placed three times in her first campaign and finished off belatedly on Heavy10 footing here in the Maiden 1050 metres on 28 August. Contesting the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres, she too would appear to prefer better going.

2:50 p.m. R5 2 Rip Van Gogh (5 g Rip Van Winkle - On the Move) - Troy Harris; got back and ran on without threatening in the Rating 60 970 metres last Wednesday at Cambridge (poly-track), and contests the $14,000 Rating 60 1600 metres. He has placed twice here on good footing and could go okay if he copes with ground - the first of two in the race for trainer Mark Walker.

2:50 p.m. R5 6 Madame Moet (5 m Iffraaj - Champagne Katie) - Opie Bosson; got back and was unable to quicken when resuming in the Rating 65 1300 metres on 24 August at Taupo, won by stable-mate Zeitaku (Savabeel). A course/distance winner in January on a Soft7 track, she needs to handle the Heavy10 to make an impact in the $14,000 Rating 60 1600 metres.

3:29 p.m. R6 1 Te AkauCaliburn (8 g Camelot - Enchanted Evening) - Niranjan Parmar (a3); found Heavy10 conditions beyond him when resuming in the Rating 75 1600 metres here on 28 August, and steps up in the $14,000 Rating 75 2000 metres. Claiming to 61kg, he is a staying type, but the going will be the challenging factor.   Two stable runner contest this event.

3:29 p.m. R6 3 The Mighty Spar (5 g Savabeel - O'Dianne) - Opie Bosson; finished solidly out of midfield for fourth when resuming here in the Rating 75 1600 metres on 28 August, and also steps up in the $14,000 Rating 75 2000 metres. Twice a winner on the course to 2000 metres, he should race well, but again the track conditions will be the question.
