Te Akau Matamata Wednesday Preview

Te Akau New Zealand has five horses racing on Wednesday 17 April at Matamata.

As on Tuesday 16 April the conditions were: fine and Dead5, rail true. No rain forecast.

1.09 p.m. R3 1 Louis Luck   (2 g Dissident - My Option) - Leith Innes; won the $30,000 2YO 1200 metres when debuting in January at Trentham, gaining sufficient stake money to contest the $1m Karaka Million (Restricted Listed, 1200m). Te Akau had five in the race, resulting in a trifecta, with Louis Luck fighting on after contesting the pace. Although without a trial, he brings the right form to prove competitive fresh-up with luck from barrier 10 in the $10,000 2YO 1000 metres.

1.09 p.m. R3 6 Folk Dress  (2 f Pierro - Gypsy Chimes) - Craig Grylls; received a copybook ride to win here by one and three-quarter lengths in the Maiden 2YO 1200 metres on 13 March, after fighting hard for fourth on debut in the Woburn Farm 2YO Classic (Gr. 3, 1200m) at New Plymouth, and running the fastest last 600m (33.6) for second in the Maiden 2YO 1200 metres at Pukekohe, both in February. She appears a strong chance from barrier five in the $10,000 2YO 1000 metres, with blinkers on.

2.19 p.m. R5 3 Willpower (3 g Power - The Lady) - Matt Cameron; finished solidly for a close fourth when resuming in the Maiden 1200 metres on 28 March at Waipukurau, and contests the corresponding event from barrier six. He has contested strong form races, shows natural ability, and rates an each way chance from barrier six.

4.04 p.m. R8 6 Qian Gua  (4 g Cape Blanco - Cool Diamonds) - Craig Grylls; won two of his four starts when campaigned last autumn, finished second twice, and resumes in the $11,000 Rating 72 1400 metres following two solid trials. Boasting strong course form, two wins and a second from four starts over 1600m on rain-affected ground, a solid performance would set him up.

4.36 p.m. R9 14 English Rose  (4 m Makfi - Bislieri) - Craig Grylls; was never off the bridle when finishing third in a trial on 26 February at Avondale, before winning by three and a quarter lengths under a brilliantly judged ride in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series 1400 metres (eligible $11,500 bonus) on 20 March at Rotorua. Up in grade to contest the $10,000 Rating 65 1600 metres, she faces a stiffer task but more mature now and should go well with luck from a wide gate (12).
