Te Akau Matamata Wednesday Preview

Te Akau New Zealand has eight horses racing on Wednesday 8 May at Matamata.

As on race morning the conditions were: cloudy and Dead6, rail out 4 metres. No rain forecast.

11.14 a.m. R1 3 Jet Set  (4 g Savabeel - Society Lady) - Jonathan Riddell; worked home without threatening from back in the field on 27 April in the Maiden 1400 metres at Te Rapa, having handled slow ground with a solid effort for second in the Maiden 1400 metres on 12 April at Rotorua. Able to take up a handier position from barrier five in the $10,000 Maiden 1600 metres should coincide with a forward showing.

12.14 p.m. R3 1 Willpower  (3 g Power - The Lady) - Craig Grylls; broke through at his fifth start when winning the Maiden 1200 metres here on 17 April and steps in class for the $10,000 3YO 1200 metres. He has contested strong form races, shows natural ability, and should measure up from barrier one.

12.14 p.m. R3 4 Pinultimate  (3 f Pins - Lost In Dubai) - Opie Bosson; won on debut by four lengths in October at Tauranga, and spelled after winning her next start at Otaki, both over 1200 metres. She resumed with a notable effort for fifth when meeting a smart field in the 3YO 1200 metres on 14 April at Te Rapa, and shapes as a genuine contender from barrier two in the $10,000 3YO 1200 metres.

12.49 p.m. R4 13 Lilikoi  (2 f Charm Spirit - Barbadine) - Craig Grylls; was impressive winning a trial here before running home in tight quarters for sixth on debut in the Maiden 2YO 1000 metres on 13 February at Te Aroha. Naturally talented, with dam side pedigree to get over more ground, she has been freshened and should race well in the $10,000 Maiden 2YO 1200 metres.

2.34 p.m. R7 6 Icebomb  (4 m Darci Brahma - Snowdonia) - Joe Kamaruddin (a4); looked good through the line in a quiet trial on 26 March at Cambridge, before peaking on her fresh-up run for fifth in the Rating 72 1300 metres on 13 April at Hastings. Drawn wide in the $11,000 Rating 72 1200 metres should constitute a patient ride, but she possesses a big finish and aided by weight relief to 54.5kgs.

3.44 p.m. R9 5 Lady Zeraph  (4 m Makfi - Zatiger) - Troy Harris; ran home solidly for sixth amongst horses that ran the fastest 600m (33.9) on the day when resuming in the Rating 72 1200 metres on 23 March at Tauranga, but worked too hard early second-up over a mile on 18 April at Woodville. A staying mare of promise, she has the addition of a tongue tie and receives a chance to improve from barrier one in the $10,000 Rating 65 1600 metres.

3.44 p.m. R9 13 English Rose  (4 m Makfi - Bislieri) - Opie Bosson; scored fresh-up by three and a quarter lengths under a brilliantly judged ride in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series 1400 metres (eligible $11,500 bonus) on 20 March at Rotorua, but came undone up in grade when working on a competitive pace in the Rating 65 1600 metres here on 17 April. In the corresponding event, she requires luck from a wide gate.

4.18 p.m. R10 4 Richard of Yorke  (7 g Oasis Dream - Cascata) - Joe Kamaruddin (a4); closed solidly from last, clocking a faster last 600m (35.3) than the winner when resuming in the Rating 72 1600 metres on 7 April at Pukekohe, and did the same under a good ride from Kamaruddin when finishing fifth in the Rating 72 1600 metres on 25 April at Awapuni. Suited stepping in distance for the $11,000 Rating 72 2000 metres, weight relief to 55kgs is ideal but he requires luck from a wide draw.
