Te Akau Monday Update

David writes:

Saturday would have to be one of the best days in the history of Te Akau Racing.

We had seven wins for our Te Akau owners - that's our way of saying a massive thank you to all our owners who have invested with us.

The day started brilliantly with Savy Yong Blonk winning the first race at Ellerslie in impressive style. A couple of races later, we won the 2YO race at Trentham with Pazienza winning her first start by five lengths. We finished off a great day of New Zealand racing by winning two Group 1 races at Ellerslie with Cool Aza Beel and Avantage.

Such an amazing feat for our trainer Jamie Richards and his team.

But the day was not over yet - we tuned in to watch the races in Singapore, where our trainer Mark Walker claimed three consecutive races. This capped off one of the best days in the history of Te Akau Racing.

It is an interesting fact around Cool Aza Beel winning the Group 1 Sistema Stakes, as this is the fourth time in the last five years that we have won this prestigious two year old race - there are only two Group 1 races for juveniles in the country too.

2016 Heroic Valour (who is now standing at stud in Australia)

2018 Sword of Osman (still racing)

2019 Yourdeel (sold to Australia)

2020 Cool Aza Beel

New Zealand Trainers' Premiership (as at 9.3.20) - note this does not include Australian wins - three at Group 1 level this season in Melbourne & Sydney

It was a fantastic day of racing and we had a wonderful night celebrating extremely well with Jamie Richards, friends and family.

It's quite incredible that the horses we have bought and trained have won 19 black type races this season - 11 of those races are Group 1's.

Another Te Akau fact that I have found quite remarkable is Avantage has now won Group 1 races at 1200m, 1400m, 1600m and 2000m.

Now that is some effort! She will have her next start at Te Aroha in the Group 1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes on 4 April.

While on the subject of Saturday's racing, we would like to congratulate Tony Pike on winning the Group 1 at Randwick on Saturday with The Bostonian. It was a great training effort, with a great sprinter.

This just makes all our form stack up so well. We need more Group races, not fewer, and the recent form of our horses in Sydney will all help this.

Karyn and I thoroughly enjoyed the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup Carnival we thought it was a terrific success - well done to the Auckland Racing Club.

There is only one thing that disappointed me - and that is so many of our racing administrators are not even seen at the races.  For example, you would think if you were in a paid position, you would attend Auckland Racing Club's biggest carnival?

When I was on the NZTR board, I went to every meeting so that I could keep all the various committees up to date with what was happening at NZTR. I would go and talk to the likes of Paul Wilcox, CEO at Ellerslie, to see how his club was tracking and discuss any issues that arose.

It was great to see NZTR board member, Cameron George, at Ellerslie, and I also saw Dr Alan Jackson and NZTR CEO Bernard Saundry but it was disappointing that there wasn't better representation or perhaps I just didn't come across them.

This coming Saturday Karyn and I are off to Trentham. Te Akau will have three runners in the Wellington Guineas and two in the St Ledger, plus Te Akau is sponsoring a race.

We don't have many shares now available in our yearlings, but you would be really remiss not to have a very close look at this filly, as the success record of our final yearlings to sell is extraordinary to say the least - Cool Aza Beel, Avantage, Sword of Osman etc - and this filly is right up there class and quality wise:

LOT 449 our Savabeel filly out of Baby Shacks

This filly could well be our next Probabeel - just a beautiful filly with tons of class. If I have ever seen a Karaka Million filly, she is it. Have a look at this filly on this website www.tekauracing.com under "Yearlings and Shares".

I have told my wife Karyn that this is the yearling she should invest in.

This Baby Shacks filly is by Savabeel and just look at the record we have had with his progeny. This is one filly that I can personally recommend.

This coming weekend we have horses racing Melbourne, Sydney, Trentham and Tauranga. It will also be a sad day to farewell our daughter Lydia, now Mrs Roseby, and her husband Jamie as they return to the UK. The only great thing about that is that they will be back for good by Christmas!

Best of luck to all our owners with runners and
GO THE TANGERINE!
