Te Akau Monday Update

David writes:

I often use the terminology ‘Go the Tangerine' - when cheering the team on - well that was an understatement on Saturday! As within seven and a half hours, Te Akau Racing won seven races in three different countries - including two Group 3's - one in Australia and one in New Zealand.

I have never been so proud or had a bigger thrill in my life - it was so exciting for our owners and our whole team!

The day started with Vamos Bebe, an I Am Invincible filly that we train for Trelawney Stud - Brent, Cherry and Faith Taylor, who won stylishly (back to back) over 1200m. She was followed by Miss Aotearoa, who won the $70,000 Group 3 Hawkes Bay Breeders' Gold Trail Stakes - the first leg of this prestigious NZB Filly of the Year Series. This was a race won by Avantage two years ago.

Savy Yong Blonk then took out the Open Mile and, to finish a truly sensational day, our New Zealand trainer Jamie Richards also won in Sydney. Probabeel was superb in winning the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Stakes at Royal Randwick. Gee, I don't know how they are going to beat her in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap with 52.5kgs! I thought she won very easily and had a fair bit on the field.

Jamie and our Kiwi team are absolutely on fire, and so is our Singapore trainer Mark Walker, as our winning Saturday did not stop at Sydney! Later that evening, Mark won three races at Kranji on a day where the conditions were not ideal as there was a lot of rain.

It has been a lot of hard work for Mark and team in Singapore as the Malaysian staff who we employ are unable to cross the border each day to come and work in Singapore. So there have been great demands on the team - so to still to lead the Trainers' Premiership and to win three races on Saturday was a genuinely great performance.

Both Te Akau trainers are now in front of their Trainers' Premierships in their respective countries. How proud do you think that makes 'team leader'!?

Well done, team. These types of results are not possible without the unbelievable staff that we have, so a massive congratulations to all our incredible team for their hard work and dedication. And of course, a massive thank you to our owners - we could not do this without the support you all give us.

It was a massive disappointment to me that New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing decided to cancel the annual NZTR Horse of the Year thoroughbred awards' evening this year, especially now that we are in Level One. It will instead have a virtual event to announce the winners.

Here at Te Akau Racing, we have decided to host our own awards! We are staging our awards at the Waikato Racing Club on Sunday 11 October and will be inviting all our owners to come and join us for a fun evening.  We will be broadcasting NZTR's awards' presentation live at our venue - it will be a fabulous evening.

Te Akau Racing has finalists in the Champion 2YO of the Year, Champion 3YO of the Year, Champion Sprinter/Miler of the Year and Jamie has already won the Champion Trainer of the Year award (as he was the sole finalist. Opie is also the hot favourite for Champion Jockey of the Year title. It is going to be a big night, and our Marketing Manager Julia-Rose Hayes is organising every detail - I am so looking forward to seeing it all come together!

The weather has been remarkably warm at Te Akau Stud. Yesterday it was 18 degrees which is certainly going to help the grass growth.

We have a very busy week on the farm, with most of the days taken up with docking which we hope to have finished by the end of the week.

Over the weekend, we had our very last ewe to lamb give birth to a strong set of twins, and some of our cattle aren't too far away from going to Greenlea Premier Meats Ltd. Our livestock is in great condition, as you can see below and in our main picture:

It's been a beautiful day here at the farm, but we do have three days of warm rain being on the forecast - go the good guys! As you can tell, I am looking forward to it!

Have a great week everyone and best of luck to our owners who runners at Matamata on Wednesday!
