Te Akau Monday Update

On Tuesday night we cut about 150 acres of grass for haylage, we cut this so we have plenty of cattle feed for a drought or we can use it in the winter if we want too.
Cutting the haylage also had a added effect of cleaning the paddocks out so that they come away with beautiful fresh feed for the summer.

No sooner had I cut the grass than the rain started falling and we had 28mils in total on Friday morning and the forecast was for rain on Saturday rain on Sunday and more rain on Monday and fine weather was not on the forecast until Tuesday. I was pretty depressed thinking about how we were going to handle it but the sun came out at Te Akau on Saturday and a nice breeze developed and the hay contractors sent 7 tractors out and had 436 big bales of haylage all made in about 7 hours. It is all wrapped and stacked neatly to be used at a later date. Now we have the sheep and cattle in those paddocks chewing the edges so that the paddock comes away really nicely for mares and foals in January and yearlings.

With Karyn in London I spent the weekend working on the farm. We moved a lot of cattle from one farm to another and I have everything organized for the week ahead. This week I have owners coming everyday and on Sunday we have two lots. I always enjoy showing them around the farm and on Friday we start looking at yearlings at various farms so it is a full on week. I am really looking forward to starting to look forward to yearlings.
If you would like to come and look at yearlings with me at one of the parades you would be more than welcome to join us. Have a great week.
