Te Akau Monday Update

It's always a significant day at Te Akau Stud when we start breaking the horses in - and this morning James Jackson our head breaker was back and ready for action. We have 18 home-bred yearlings to start with which will take about four weeks and then we will start breaking in the horses that we purchased at the Karaka sales.
It is quite incredibly the interest we have in the yearlings that we bought and shares are selling so quickly that we haven't even had time to update the website. This morning for example I sold my first share at 8.00am on the phone, I had an owner here at 9am (who has shares in the likes of Flaming and Spellbinder, both lovely fillies) and another due from Australia at midday plus I have a long list of interested people who I need to ring this afternoon.
Yesterday afternoon Mark Walker, Jamie Richards and myself went around all the yearlings and I can confidently say that I have never seen a better group of yearlings on any property ever. They are stunning racehorses in the making.
Last night we had 18mls of rain which was enough to settle the dust but not enough to end the drought - there was a lot more rain in places like Te Awamutu that had up to 50mls but I hope the forecast is right as they say it is going to rain each day this week.
Of course the other highlight from Sunday was cheering home yet another Te Akau Singapore winner in Free Happy, owned locally in Singapore. It was really great to be able to watch the Kranji races with Mark Walker at the farm too before he travels back to Singapore on Thursday.
