Te Akau Monday Update

David writes:

It's great to be home after nine days in Sydney. We had a remarkable time. The New Zealand bred horses enjoyed a sensational carnival winning races like the Group 1 Derby, Group 1 Oaks and A$4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes etc.

They had a super crowd at Randwick on Saturday and it was great fun to be part of it all. The sales were moderately successful although I thought most of the horses I saw would have actually made more money at Karaka which bodes well for Karaka 2017. Te Akau purchased two colts at the sale and we were given a beautiful filly to train by Coolmore Stud. She is a Fastnet Rock filly out of Forest Native and is a full Sister to Foxwedge who stands at stud in Australia at Newgate Farm.

We purchased a Stratum colt from the family of Redoute's Choice for A$200,000 and a Fastnet Rock colt out of Dragon's Tail for A$400,000. Dragon's Tail is by Galileo who has sired a world record 210 black type winners and is regarded as the best sire in the world. This colt has two full sisters showing plenty of promise in training, one with Te Akau and one with Gai Waterhouse in Sydney. It looks like Dragon's Tail is going to be a very good broodmare.

The Fastnet Rock/Galileo cross is hugely successful and last year left the Oaks winner at Epsom in England, you cannot get better than that. As I said, this colt was purchased for A$400,000 and we only have ONE share now available in him so if you want to win a Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas and a Group 1 NZ Derby then this colt is the way to go.  I bought this Fastnet Rock colt from Erinvale Thoroughbreds and was reminded that the last horse I bought from them was in fact the great Princess Coup. She won four Group One races and was the Champion 3YO of her year - so if you are interested in our colt, call me at Te Akau Stud today on 07 825 4701 or email Karyn - [email protected].

Karyn and I were cheering hard for Sofia Rosa in the Group 1 Australian Oaks in Sydney as we purchased her full sister at Karaka this year. I now have some very happy investors in her. I paid $200,000 for her at Karaka but I know she would be worth much more now! Well done to Stephen Marsh, a really great young trainer who is heading for the top and also to former Te Akau apprentice Troy Harris who looks after the filly and rides her in all of her work.

Te Akau Racing also had a great weekend with Mark Walker winning races in Singapore on Friday night and Sunday and Steve & Jamie pitched in with three wins for the weekend - firstly on Friday with Echezeaux, in a great quinella with Cathedral Cove (one of the most improved horses in our stable). Echezeaux is a half-sister to Darci Brahma and Burgundy and is owned by Sir Peter Vela. The yesterday the team won two further races both with horses that I bought from Karaka - Zambezi Warrior who is a Pentire gelding out of a Zabeel mare (same cross as Xtravagant) and Flirty Gertey, a Thorn Park mare who also won very well and who I purchased for $110,000.

Have a great week - and just look at our new Fastnet Rock colt's kind eye - ONE SHARE REMAINS!
