Te Akau New Zealand has three horses racing on 1 January: Tauranga and Tauherenikau.
Tauranga:
Weather: fine, track: Dead6, rail: out 6 metres.
2.02 p.m. R3 1 Byzantine (4 g Savabeel - Baradevi) - Opie Bosson; showed good acceleration to record a deserved victory in the Rating 72 1200 metres on 11 December at Hastings, running the fastest last 600m (34.1) on the day. Remaining in the same grade, but up in weight (60kgs) for the $11,000 Rating 72 1300 metres, he rates a top three chance.
Tauherenikau:
Weather: fine, track: Dead4, rail: true
1.41 p.m. R2 7 Meritorious (3 f Burgundy - Iconic) - Rosie Myers; won stylishly when trialling on 13 November at Avondale, but never fired fresh-up in the Maiden 3YO 1100 metres on 5 December at New Plymouth. From a good family, she is capable of an improved showing from barrier two in the $10,000 Maiden 1000 metres.
5.11 p.m. R8 1 You're Welcome (4 g Camelot - Chorus of Angels) - Rosie Myers; finished fourth after positioning outside the leader in the Rating 65 1400 metres on 11 December at Hastings, and receives an opportunity to improve further in the $10,000 Rating 65 1400 metres.
