Te Akau NZ & Sydney Saturday Preview
12 April, 2019
Te Akau New Zealand has five horses racing on Saturday 13 April: Hastings, and Randwick (Sydney).
Hastings:
As on Friday 12 April the conditions were: cloudy and Dead6, rail true. No rain forecast.
1.20 p.m. R2 6 Puysegur (2 f Fastnet Rock - Pins ‘N' Needles) - Craig Grylls; spelled following a debut victory in October at Riccarton, and looked classy winning with her ears pricked at the trials on 19 March at Matamata. The only race winner in the $22,500 2YO 1300 metres, drawn barrier four, she is a three-quarter sister to Champion Two-Year-Old and stable-mate Avantage (Fastnet Rock), below, and harbours plenty of family ability. Fixed odds: $2.40 & $1.25.
2.32 p.m. R4 3 Icebomb (4 m Darci Brahma - Snowdonia) - Craig Grylls; looked good through the line in a quiet trial on 26 March at Cambridge, and resumes in the $25,000 Rating 72 1300 metres. A mare with terrific form, winning three and finishing second in six of her 12 starts. She finished second over this distance at her only course attempt and rates a top three chance in this field. Fixed odds: $6.00 & $2.30.
3.05 p.m. R5 8 Sasso Corbaro (4 m All Too Hard - Furline) - Craig Grylls; could hardly have been more impressive in her first start for the stable when winning the Rating 82 1200 metres on 23 February at Otaki, and ran the fastest final 600m (33.2) when closing the gap from last to finish sixth in the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1200m) on Wellington Cup Day (16 March) at Trentham. With blinkers on, she would likely settle off the pace from a wide draw (12) but should be finding the line strongly to rate a top four chance in the $50,000 NZB Finance Sprint (Listed, 1200m). Fixed odds: $7.00 & $2.50.
3.40 p.m. R6 3 Griffin (4 g Iffraaj - Double Elle) - Chelsea Burdan (4); made it three from four during this campaign with victory in the Rating 72 1500 metres in February at Wairoa, notching a double during their two-day meeting, ridden by Te Akau apprentice Chelsea Burdan, and followed up with a strong second in the Rating 82 1400 metres on 30 March at Ellerslie. Claiming to 54kgs in the $30,000 Rating 82 1400 metres, he rates a top three chance from barrier five. Fixed odds: $7.00 & $2.35.
Royal Randwick, Sydney:
As on Friday 12 April the conditions were: overcast and Soft5, rail out 3 metres. No rain forecast.
3.50 p.m. (NZ time) R5 11 Avantage (3 f Fastnet Rock - Asavant) - Opie Bosson; made it seven wins from eight starts with a courageous fresh-up win in the TAB Birthday Card Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) three weeks ago at Rosehill Gardens, and steps up in class to contest the $1m Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Gr. 2, 1200m). Crowned Champion Two-Year-Old after winning the $1m Karaka Million (Listed, 1200m) and Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m), she is a filly of undoubted class and drawn barrier five aids her prospects in a hot field. NZ TAB fixed odds: $4.80 & $1.95, Unibet $5.00.
