Te Akau Ready To Run Wrap 2024

Date: 21 Nov 2024

Saddle up! Our Class of the 2024 Karaka Ready To Run Sale is here!

In the heart of Karaka, where dreams and champions are forged, the atmosphere was electric as the hammer fell on ten exceptional two-year-olds, most destined to don Te Akau’s iconic tangerine silks. Over two days of precision, passion, and promise, the Te Akau team had done the work, studied the pedigrees and scoured the Ready To Run Sale for the next generation of racetrack legends. We invite you to catch up with David Ellis CNZM who covers some of our purchases.

Some highlights of the sale include:

- The Sale Begins: Savabeel Magic

The event opened on a high note with Lot 13, a stunning Savabeel gelding out of Jolie Blonde. With his gleaming bay coat and powerful stride, he immediately caught the eye of David Ellis CNZM.

"He’s a classic son of Savabeel, breezed up well, and Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson were particularly taken with his physique and everything about him,” Ellis remarked. “We love the pedigree of Savabeel over a Testa Rossa mare, and we’ve had great success with it at the highest level. This gelding has the makings of a really nice three-year-old type.”

- A Promising Legacy

Next came Lot 87, a gelding from the first crop of Coolmore Stud stallion and dual Group One winner King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice). His smooth balance and athleticism were on full display during his breeze-up at Te Rapa.

"He’s a great moving horse, breezed up well, and we liked everything about him. He’s strong, out of a good mare, and we’re obviously bullish about the stallion,” Ellis said.

The gelding boasts an impressive pedigree. His dam, My Chicharita, trained in Matamata, was a Group 2 winning mare, while his grand-dam Trisynd was sired by the legendary Sir Tristram. From champions to versatility, his lineage promises class and performance.

- The King of Karaka Strikes Again

Te Akau’s standout moment came when Lot 174, a colt by I Am Invincible out of Shillelagh, entered the ring. With his commanding presence and a lightning-fast breeze-up (9.97 seconds), the colt was the star of the sale.

After intense bidding, Ellis secured him for $1.65 million - a new Southern Hemisphere 2YO sale record.

"I have never seen a colt of this quality at the Ready To Run Sale,” Ellis said.

“He’s by I Am Invincible, the sire of Imperatriz, and out of Shillelagh, a dual Group 1 winner we trained early in her career. He’s got the pedigree, presence and professionalism to be something truly special.”

Educated in New Zealand, this colt will be assessed at Te Akau’s Matamata stables before potentially heading to our Cranbourne base in Australia.

- Hidden Gems and Future Stars

Not every standout was a high-priced showstopper. Te Akau’s knack for finding hidden talent shone through with Lot 261, a Shocking gelding whose staying potential impressed Ellis.

"He’s a stayer in the making, the kind of horse that will thrive in the in Te Akau's stable,” he said.

Similarly, Lot 266, a Redwood filly, showcased athleticism and balance and was a steal at $75,000. Out of a mare called Always In Trouble, Karyn thinks it reminds her of someone (smile)!!
