Te Akau Riccarton Midweek Preview

Te Akau Racing has eight horses entered on Wednesday 9 November at Riccarton.

Weather: overcast, track: Soft6, rail: true. No rain forecast.

2:50 p.m. R5 3 Rhetorical (2 f Snitzel - Xpression) - Daniel Stackhouse; she recorded a polished victory in the Maiden 2YO 800 metres on 1 October and led home a Te Akau trifecta beating Sky On Fire and Rubicon Crossing, below, in the Pearl Series 2YO 800 metres on 22 October, both at Riccarton. She warrants favouritism in the $80,000 Riccarton Park Function Centre Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m), and is seeking to give stable its eighth race victory. Fixed odds: $2.70 & $1.30.

2:50 p.m. R5 4 Rubicon Crossing (2 f Rubick - Miss Foxwood) - Lisa Allpress; she did everything right when winning on debut in the Maiden 2YO 800 metres on 3 September at Wanganui, with Allpress aboard, and was similar again when third to Rhetorical (above) here on 22 October. She should go well again in the $80,000 Riccarton Park Function Centre Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m). Fixed odds: $5.00 & $1.55.

2:50 p.m. R5 5 Sky on Fire (2 f Exceed and Excel - Elusive Meteor) - Josh Parr; she was grabbed (a nose) on the line when debuting in the Maiden 2YO 800 metres on 29 September at Otaki, and was second to Rhetorical (above) here on 22 October. She may be the quickest of the trio into gear and is expected to race well again in the $80,000 Riccarton Park Function Centre Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m). Fixed odds: $3.00 & $1.30.

4:04 p.m. R7 8 Zouluminous (6 m Zoustar - Luminous Harmony) - Craig Grylls; she worked home to grab third in the Open 1400 metres on 1 November at Wingatui, and contests the $100,000 Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m). Runner-up in the South Island Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m) here in March, she is a genuine type but will require luck from her difficult draw (12) - one of a stable trifecta. Fixed odds: $12.00 & $3.80.

4:04 p.m. R7 12 Fashion Shoot (5 m Savabeel - High Fashion) - Josh Parr; she continued her career best form when clocking the fastest last 600m (34.0) on the day for second in the Rating 75 1200 metres on 29 October at Matamata, and she too contests the $100,000 Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m). She likes the course, is up to the opposition, but also requires luck from her carpark draw (16). Fixed odds: $6.00 & $2.30.

4:04 p.m. R7 14 Irish Red (4 m Burgundy - Niamh Elizabeth) - Chris Johnson; she worked home behind the leading group for sixth in the Rating 75 1200 metres on 1 November at Wingatui, and also contests the $100,000 Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m). She's another that performs well here, she has stakes' placed three times, barrier one assists greatly, and she tries. Fixed odds: $26.00 & $6.00.

5:14 p.m. R9 3 Markus Aurelius (6 g Ghibellines - Evancho) - Michael McNab; he returned to form with a big effort for second in the Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m) on 8 October, and kept it alive with running second in the Thompson Handicap (Gr. 3, 1600m) on 23 October at Trentham. The defending title holder in the $250,000 18thCoupland's Bakeries Mile (Gr. 3, 1600m), he has great stats and rates a top three chance with luck from his wide draw (13). Fixed odds: $6.50 & $2.40.

5:14 p.m. R9 5 Perfect Scenario (5 g Iffraaj - Rosetti Bay) - Josh Parr; he put himself right in contention for the $250,000 18thCoupland's Bakeries Mile (Gr. 3, 1600m) when charging home to win the Coupland's Bakeries Mile Prelude (Open, 1400m) here on 22 October. He has raced well all season and is ideally drawn (5) to make his presence felt. Fixed odds: $6.00 & $2.30.
