Te Akau Rotorua Preview
13 April, 2016
Te Akau New Zealand has five horses entered for the nine race programme on Wednesday 13 April at Rotorua.
As on Tuesday 12 April the conditions were: overcast and Dead5, rail out 2.5 metres. Currently, 11mls is forecast race day morning.
12.45 p.m. R2 10 Brer (7 g China Cat - La Fox) - Daniel Miller (a3); missed last season after winning two steeplechases at Riccarton, with this rider aboard, and returned to the fray with an encouraging midfield finish in the Rating 65 1818 metres on a Dead6 track at New Plymouth. Although meeting a few of his jumping mates in the Rating 65 & Jumper High-Weight 1950 metres, he may find others too slick on the flat. Claiming to 62kgs, the intention is a jumps' race next time out.
1.55 p.m. R4 1 Zavistic (2 c Zacinto - Miss Avalon) - Matt Cameron; trailed when finishing third on debut in the Maiden 2YO 1200 metres on Dead4 at Matamata, and from barrier one should take up a similar spot in the second of two 2YO 1200-metre races on the programme. Of his rivals, the strongest race day form appears around Miacoca (Iffraaj) and Onstage (Jimmy Choux). He has trained on and rates an each way prospect.
2.30 p.m. R5 9 Carmenize (3 f Any Suggestion - Zevita) - Cameron Lammas; produced a good effort for third to impressive winner Sydney's Shot (Magic Albert) here on Slow7 in the Maiden 1215 metres, with this rider aboard, and contests the corresponding race. Although drawn wide, she again appears a top four chance.
3.04 p.m. R6 5 Linchpin (3 g Pins - Laurinel Princess) - Matt Cameron; has blinkers on for this assignment in the Maiden 3YO 1560 metres, after yielding late to finish fifth on rain-affected footing over a mile at New Plymouth. He appears a chance in an even field, but may be reserved if expected rain downgrades the footing to slow.
4.34 p.m. R9 12 La Dama (3 f High Chaparral - Star Affair) - Cameron Lammas; makes her debut in the Maiden 1400 metres, following a preparatory trial in March at Matamata. From a Travis Stakes (Gr. 2, 1600m) - now Gr. 2, 2000m - winner, Dennis Bros family of The Grin (Grosvenor), The Jewel (O'Reilly) etc, she shapes a promising middle distance mare. That said, her two year old three-quarter sister La Diosa (So You Think) was impressive winning over 1000 metres earlier this month at Riccarton. In a race expected to be dominated in the betting by Pacquiao (Paco Boy), a wide draw could work in her favour.
