Te Akau Saturday North Island Preview

Te Akau Racing has eight horses entered on Saturday 27 February: Matamata, and Otaki.

Matamata:

Weather: fine, track: Dead5, rail: true. No rain forecast.

1.55 p.m. R4 1 On the Bubbles (2 g Brazen Beau - More Bubbles) - Johnathan Parkes; overcame the outside draw (14) to become the fifth consecutive Karaka Million 2YO (Restricted Listed, 1200m) winner for Te Akau on 23 January at Ellerslie. With impressive performances in each of his three starts, he appears a major contender in the $70,000 Waikato Stud Slipper (Gr. 3, 1200m). Fixed odds: $1.90 & $1.15.

1.55 p.m. R4 2 Sword of State (2 c Snitzel - In the Vanguard) - Troy Harris; won on debut by 6 ½ lengths over 1200 metres in December at Te Rapa, did well for third to stable-mate Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) after contesting a fast pace in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) on 1 January at Ellerslie, and scored well here in the 2YO 1100 metres on 10 February. He is ideally drawn (2) to prove tough in $70,000 Waikato Stud Slipper (Gr. 3, 1200m). Fixed odds: $2.90 & $1.30.

1.55 p.m. R4 3 Avonallo (2 c Belardo - Real Angel) - Craig Grylls; recorded an authoritative victory in the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) during Cup Week in November at Riccarton. He improved on his fourth to impressive winning stable-mate Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) on 1 January in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m), finishing third to On the Bubbles (above) in the Karaka Million 2YO (Restricted Listed, 1200m) on 23 January at Ellerslie. Racing well, he requires luck from the outside barrier (10) in $70,000 Waikato Stud Slipper (Gr. 3, 1200m). Fixed odds: $16.00 & $3.20.

Te Akau has previously won the Slipper eight times.

3.40 p.m. R7 8 Craving (2 f Tivaci - Inscrutable) - Troy Harris; debuted solidly for fourth over 1100 metres in a good form race on 29 December at New Plymouth, and third to stable-mate Sword of State (above) in the 2YO 1100 metres on 10 February at Matamata. She has drawn a coveted barrier (1) in the $100,000 J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m). Fixed odds: $21.00 & $4.60.

Te Akau Racing has previously won the Breeders' Stakes six times.

Otaki:

Weather: cloudy, track: Dead5, rail: true. No rain forecast.

1.37 p.m. R3 5 The Panther (3 g Iffraaj - La Panthere) - Opie Bosson; was given time after finishing sixth on debut in December at Taupo, and won well at the trials on 16 February at Cambridge. Bred to go further, but he is ideally drawn (1) in the $10,000 Maiden 1100 metres. Fixed odds: $4.60 & $1.90.

2.12 p.m. R4 2 Equinox (4 g Exceed and Excel - Our Ella Belle) - Opie Bosson; ended his previous campaign in good form, won at the trials on 12 January at Matamata, but without zest when resuming in the Open 1200 metres on 31 January at Pukekohe. Back left-handed in the $27,500 Rating 74 1300 metres, he is capable of better from barrier one. Fixed odds: $6.50 & $2.25.

2.12 p.m. R4 4 Summer Monsoon (6 g Stratum - Princess Narine) - Joe Kamaruddin (a3); freshened on the right note, after winning the Rating 74 1200 metres on NZ Cup Day in November at Riccarton, and galloped home well under his own steam for second when trialling on 12 January at Matamata. He carried a big weight (61.5kg) when resuming in the Rating 74 1200 metres on 31 January at Pukekohe, and capable of improvement in the $27,500 Rating 74 1300 metres. Fixed odds: $6.00 & $2.20.

3.58 p.m. R7 4 Avantage (5 m Fastnet Rock - Asavant) - Opie Bosson; recorded her seventh Group One victory with an enormous gallop in the BCD Group Sprint (Gr. 1, 1400m) a fortnight ago at Te Rapa, running a slick 1:20.8. She has won three Group One races at her last three starts and warrants hot favouritism to defend her title in the $200,000 El Cheapo Cars Weight-For-Age Classic (Gr. 1, 1600m). Fixed odds: $1.25 & $1.00.
