Te Akau Saturday Preview
2 February, 2019
Te Akau New Zealand has three horses racing on Saturday 2 February: New Plymouth, and Wingatui.
New Plymouth:
As on race morning the conditions were: fine and Dead4, rail out 5 metres. 2mls forecast Friday, no rain Saturday.
2.10 p.m. R4 10 Folk Dress (2 f Pierro - Gypsy Chimes) - Craig Grylls; travelled beautifully when winning a trial in splendid fashion on 8 January at Cambridge, and ideally drawn (4) to debut in the $70,000 Woburn Farm 2YO Classic (Gr. 3, 1200m). One trial, one win (7 ¼ lengths) looks quite rosy to go well in the Coolmore Stud colours. Fixed odds: $3.90 & $1.55.
2.45 p.m. R5 3 Duck Road(3 g Ekraar - Silver Buttons) - Jonathan Riddell; capped good form with a tough win on 16 January in the Maiden 1400 metres at Rotorua. He meets a strong field in the $80,000 Special Conditions 1400 metres, but finished second to $2.70 race favourite Vigor Winner (Declaration of War) on 1 January at Hastings, and luck from a wide draw (13) can see him in contention. Fixed odds: $31.00 & $6.50.
Wingatui:
As on race morning the conditions were: fine and Good3, rail true. No rain forecast.
2.27 p.m. R4 3 Weaponry(3 g Declaration of War - Cat Shmea) - Jason Laking; warranted favouritism a fortnight ago in the Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m) when heading South after making the perfect start to his racing career - two wins from two starts - and justified the support with a solid third. Drawn barrier four in the $50,000 Mediaworks Dunedin Guineas (Listed, 1500m) provides an ideal platform to prove very competitive again. Fixed odds: $2.70 & $1.36.
