Te Akau Saturday Preview

Te Akau New Zealand has three horses racing on Saturday 11 May: Rotorua, New Plymouth, and Doomben (Brisbane).

Rotorua:

As on Friday 10 May the conditions were: cloudy and Slow7, rail true. No rain forecast.

3.34 p.m. R7 10 Sasso Corbaro (4 m All Too Hard - Furline) - Opie Bosson; could
hardly have been more impressive in her first start for the stable when winning
the Rating 82 1200 metres on Slow8 in February at Otaki, ridden by Bosson, and
ran the fastest final 600m (33.2) when closing from last to finish sixth in the
Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1200m) on Wellington Cup Day (16 March) at
Trentham. She was reported to have a blood irregularity after contesting the
NZB Finance Sprint (Listed, 1200m) on 13 April at Hastings, and should appreciate
give in the ground for the weight-for-age $70,000 ISCL Rotorua Stakes (Gr. 3,
1400m). Fixed odds:
$17.00 & $5.00.

New Plymouth:

As on Friday 10 May the conditions were: overcast and Slow9, rail out 6 metres. Showers forecast Friday, no rain Saturday.

12.56 p.m. R2 6 Spirit of Galway (3 f Rip Van Winkle - Galway) - Rosie Myers; finished strongly into third with more to offer when trialling on 15 April at Waipa, and resumes in the $10,000 Maiden 1200 metres. One of the best Maiden gallopers in the country, having recorded two seconds, two thirds, and a fourth from five starts and appears on the verge of breaking through. A three-quarter sister to Group One winner Shillelagh (Savabeel) and stakes winner Grazia (Savabeel), both trained by Te Akau, she too is naturally talented, has shown to handle give, and rates a top three chance. Fixed odds: $2.60 & $1.35.

Doomben:

As on Friday 10 May the conditions were: overcast and Good4, rail true. 3mls rain forecast overnight Friday.

6.30 p.m. (NZ time) R9 14 Mongolianconqueror (4 g Ocean Park - Queen Rania) - Jeff Lloyd; resumed running
the fastest final 600m (33.3) when finishing strongly into third on 6 April in
the Open 1400 metres at Te Aroha, and closed solidly with a notable performance
for sixth in the Easter Handicap (Gr. 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie. A big
improver throughout his three-year-old season: beaten by a nose in the New
Zealand Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) and 3.2 lengths in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr. 1,
2000m), he should appreciate stepping in distance for the $140,000 Kirin
Chairman's Handicap (Gr. 3, 2000m) and ideally drawn in barrier one. NZ TAB fixed
odds: $8.00 & $2.80.
