Te Akau Saturday Preview - NZ & Sydney
21 August, 2020
Te Akau New Zealand has three horses racing on Saturday 22 August: Awapuni, and Royal Randwick (Sydney).
Awapuni:
Weather: cloudy, track: Heavy10, rail: out 3 metres from 800m - 400m, remainder true. 12mls rain forecast Friday and 7mls Saturday.
10.50 a.m. R1 1 Bak Da Master (6 g Mastercraftsman - Bak Da Princess) - Michael Roustoby (a3); became the 100thwinner for trainer Jamie Richards last season when scoring here in July, with Roustoby aboard, and contests the $10,000 Maiden Hurdle (2800m). He finished second at his hurdles' debut in September at Te Aroha, under Roustoby, and brings the levels of fitness required to race well in testing ground.
Randwick:
Weather: fine, track: Soft7, rail: true. No rain forecast.
4.25 p.m. (NZ time) R5 4 Probabeel (4 m Savabeel - Far Fetched) - Kerrin McEvoy; won the Surround Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m) here in February and finished second in the Phar Lap Stakes (Gr. 2, 1500m) in March. She spelled in Australia, trialled twice here on the Kensington track, and resumes in the $160,000 Mostyn Copper Show County Quality (Gr. 3, 1200m). The winner of six from 15 and $1.7m in stakes, she lacks nothing in class, ideally drawn (2), and improving ground aids her prospects. NZ TAB fixed odds: $10.00 & $2.90.
5.45 p.m. (NZ time) R7 13 Melody Belle (6 m Commands - Meleka Belle) - Kerrin McEvoy; got underway a fortnight ago in the Missile Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at Rosehill, and contests the $500,000 Winx Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m). The reigning NZ Horse of the Year, winner of 10 Group 1 races (15 from 30 and $3.5m), she usually improves second-up and needs her very best to threaten. NZ TAB fixed odds: $10.00 & $3.30.
