Te Akau Shark's Racing Return Delayed

Te Akau Racing has issued the following update on Te Akau Shark:

Te Akau Racing has today announced that there will be a delay to trans-Tasman Group 1 winner Te Akau Shark's return to training.

"The Shark" or "Darryl" (as he is affectionally known) has captured the hearts and attention of racing fans across Australasia with his bold and courageous galloping style.

"Whilst spelling, we further investigated an eye irritation of Te Akau Sharks' that we have managed successfully. Expert international equine eye surgeons, together with our Sydney veterinary team, have decided it is in Te Akau Shark's best future racing interests to undergo an optic implant surgery.  His issue is a rare one and the procedure has been scheduled for this week," David Ellis CNZM, Te Akau Racing Principal confirmed.

"Obviously this is a disappointing set-back but it is necessary that we operate now to ensure a viable future racing career for this wonderful athlete.  While the prognosis remains guarded, we are hopeful that Te Akau Shark will return to the track in due course, to again display his talent and that "wow" factor that he is so well known and loved for."

Te Akau Racing will keep the industry updated on Te Akau Shark's progress.  His owners and our team are humbled by the fan club he has attracted and the amazing support he receives every time he steps out on the track. He is a wonderful ambassador for racing.

Purchased by Te Akau's David Ellis CNZM from the NZB Ready to Run Sale for $230,000, he has been trained by Jamie Richards to win seven of his 14 appearances, including two at Group 1 level in Sydney and New Zealand. He has also placed on seven further occasions, with stakes' earnings in excess of $1.5 million.
