Te Akau Spotlight On The TAB Karaka Millions Card - Group 1 Sistema Railway Ready

19 January, 2026

Espionage Fuels Te Akau’s Group 1 Railway Ambitions.

Espionage arrived at Te Akau Racing with serious credentials and lofty ambitions, adding further depth and quality to the stable’s sprinting ranks as attention turns to the Group 1 Sistema Railway at Ellerslie Racecourse, this weekend on TAB Karaka Millions twilight.

Carrying the famous colours of Coolmore Stud, the dual Group 3 winner by Zoustar out of In Times Of War (Street Cry) showcased his class in Australia and is undoubtedly one to watch in the Group 1 feature.

Recently arrived from Australia and now based at Te Akau’s Matamata stable, Espionage has the Group 1 Railway firmly in his sights, with international Group 1 jockey Damian Lane taking the mount to add another layer of class and experience to an already compelling Sistema Railway profile.

Lightly raced but proven at a high level, Espionage has won two of his eight starts to date, with his two-year-old season delivering immediate black-type success in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) and the Group 3 Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate (1000m).

A tilt at the Railway would see Espionage attempt to add his name to an honour roll that Te Akau Racing knows exceptionally well, with the stable enjoying a golden era in the sprinting showpiece through elite performers such as Avantage, Entriviere and Imperatriz.

That recent history underscores both the calibre required to win the Railway and Te Akau’s proven ability to prepare horses to peak on the biggest stage, with Espionage now shaping as the next exciting prospect to follow that path.

With his early work in New Zealand ticking all the right boxes, the countdown to a potential Group 1 Sistema Railway challenge is officially underway!
