Te Akau Tauranga Friday Preview

Te Akau Racing has 10 horses entered on Friday 12 January at Tauranga.

Weather: cloudy, track: Soft5, rail: out 8 metres. No rain forecast.

1:13 p.m. R2 4 Aequus (4 m Iffraaj – Equanimity) – Opie Bosson; she was held up in the Rating 65 1230 metres on 10 December and ran the fastest last 600m (34.6) for second in the Rating 65 1215 metres on 28 December, both at Rotorua. She rates a top three chance in the $40,000 Rating 65 1200 metres.

1:47 p.m. R3 1 Wairau Cove (5 g Darci Brahma – Distinctive Lass) – Opie Bosson; he ran home fine when resuming in the Rating 75 1100 metres on 2 December and denied room in the Rating 75 1400 metres on 23 December, both at Te Rapa. He is certainly capable, but requires luck from an outside gate (10) in the $40,000 Rating 75 1200 metres.

2:22 p.m. R4 3 Bello Mio (4 g Deep Field – Bella Francesca) – Matt Cameron; he got back from the outside gate (10) and did well for sixth in the Rating 65 1400 metres on Boxing Day at Pukekohe, won by stable-mate Francee (Iffraaj), and contests the $40,000 Rating 65 1400 metres. He is ideally drawn (2) to rate a top four chance in a field with three stable contenders.

2:22 p.m. R4 8 Inca Belle (4 m Per Incanto – Belle Vie) – Niranjan Parmar (a1); she finished well for a close fifth in the Rating 65 1400 metres on 22 December at Matamata, and also contests the $40,000 Rating 65 1400 metres. A course winner at her only attempt, she too is capable of a first four finish.

2:22 p.m. R4 9 Alminette (4 m Burgundy – High Heels) – Opie Bosson; she got back from barrier 10 and circled widest with a strong finish for a close fourth in the Rating 65 1400 metres on 22 December at Matamata. Likewise contesting the $40,000 Rating 65 1400 metres, she is stakes' placed, has raced well here, and can feature in the finish.

2:57 p.m. R5 3 Freeze Frame (4 g Vadamos – Snow Petal) – Opie Bosson; he produced a whirlwind finish to win fresh-up in the Rating 75 1100 metres on 2 December and was stymied for room when third in the Rating 75 1400 metres on 23 December, both at Te Rapa. Going well, he is a top three contender from barrier one in the $40,000 Rating 75 1400 metres.

3:32 p.m. R6 2 Fierce Flight (5 g Flying Artie – First Bloom) – Opie Bosson; he won the Rating 83 2200 metres on 16 December and backed up with a top run for second in the Manawatu Cup (Gr. 3, 2300m) on 23 December, both at Trentham. Contesting the $50,000 Open Handicap 2100 metres, he comes in as a dual course/distance winner, and the Hawkes Bay Cup (Listed, 2200m) winner, and watch for him figuring strongly in the finish - one of two for the team.

3:32 p.m. R6 6 Leaderboard (9 g Street Cry – Flower Fairy) – Joe Doyle; he found the line nicely for fifth in the Rating 83 2200 metres on 16 December, won by Fierce Flight (above), but was not the same when backing up in the Manawatu Cup (Gr. 3, 2300m) on 23 December, both at Trentham. He seeks improvement in the $50,000 Open Handicap 2100 metres.

4:10 p.m. R7 4 Aotea Lad (7 g Savabeel – Corsage) – Opie Bosson; he was caught wide on the pace when resuming in the Open Handicap 1300 metres on 2 December and fought hard for fourth in the $50,000 Open Handicap 1600 metres on 23 December, both at Te Rapa. Contesting the corresponding race, he is a previous course winner, a consistent performer, and has good first four claims - the first of a stable duo.

4:10 p.m. R7 10 Accidental Tourist (4 g Telperion – Megara) – Michael McNab; he ran home solidly for a close third in the $50,000 Open Handicap 1600 metres on 30 November at Otaki, and finished sixth in the corresponding event on 23 December at Te Rapa. Again contesting a $50,000 Open Handicap 1600 metres, he carries minimum weight (54kg) and drawn (1) to be a threat.
