Te Akau Te Aroha Trials' Report

Te Akau trialled horses on Tuesday Dec. 17 at Te Aroha. The footing was rated Good3, with the rail out 11 metres. Photos by Stacey Bridgman.
Heat 1 2YO 650 metres (1 length, 5 lengths 37.50)
Smashing (2 f Pins - Ruud Van Slaats) - Rory Hutchings - pictured below; jumped away well to cross and lead, railed nicely around the home turn and displayed both a good action and natural ability to win well.

2 g Minstrel Court - Aventura - Mick Dee; began well to settle fourth and holding his position he ran home nicely.
Heat 2 2YO 650 metres (head, head 38.1)
2 g Stratum - Lazaan - Mick Dee - pictured below; got back in fifth, tracked up nicely against the rail in the straight and working across heels late, at the 50 metres, he dashed into third with an eye-catching performance.
Heat 3 2YO 650 metres (1 length, head 39.5)
Bon Marche (2 g Nom Du Jeu - Las Vegas Lass) - Mick Dee - pictured below; positioned handily in third and ran home strongly to finish third, doing his best work through the line.
Heat 4 2YO 650 metres (1 ½ lengths, 1 ½ lengths 39.7)
Opulent (2 f Keeper - Silk Slipper) - Craig Grylls - two pictures below; jumped well to lead from barrier one and continued travelling easily on the bridle to win with plenty in hand.
2 f Flying Spur - America's Idol - Mick Dee - pictured below left with Opulent; found a good spot handy to the pace and held a good line in the straight when running home solidly for third.
Heat 6 2YO 800 metres (½ length, 1 ¼ lengths 47.1)
2 g Tale of the Cat - Quatro - Anna Jones; settled well off the pace in seventh and although finishing behind the leading division he worked home nicely near the rail in the straight.
Heat 7 2YO 800 metres (1 ½ lengths, head 48.4)
Rockfast (2 c Fastnet Rock - Gypsy Princess) - Kelly Myers - pictured below; began well from the outside barrier in a field of eight, he was steadied in search of cover and ended up last at the 600 metres. Held up for a time in the straight, he angled to the outside at the 200m and put in some telling strides to finish third.
Heat 11 Maiden 800 metres (1 length, ½ a length 47.3)
Super Power (3 f Alamosa - Key of Future) - Mick Dee - her breeders Aidan and Amanda Rodley and family pictured below; travelled fourth on the rail, four lengths behind the two leaders, worked out to centre track in the straight and while not forcing the issue she ran home okay for sixth.
Heat 14 Maiden 800 metres (neck, head 47.6)
The Musician (3 g Minstrel Court - Carrots) - Mick Dee; jumped well to lead, held together around the home and in the straight he kept giving under his own steam to finish third in a line of four across the track.
Heat 16 Maiden 1000 metres (2 lengths, head 1:00.6)
My Fiancée (4 m Snitzel - Meet My Sis) - Mick Dee - pictured below; was easy through the early stages to settle rearward in a field of ten. She tracked up against the rail in the straight, making good ground without being pressured, and finished fifth in a tidy trial performance.
Heat 20 Maiden 1000 metres (3 lengths, ¾ lengths 59.54)
3 f More than Ready - Insouciant - Mick Dee - pictured below; began nicely from barrier one and travelled boldly in third on a solid tempo. She ranged to level on the home turn without serious urging and ran on well of fourth.
Heat 21 Maiden 1000 metres (1 ¼ lengths, head 59.4)
3 g Sir Percy - Dutyful - Mick Dee; was into the action from the outset and tracked nicely in third approaching the home turn. Clear in centre track on straightening, he ran home in good fashion for a close fifth.
Heat 22 Maiden 1000 metres (2 ¼ lengths, neck 1:00.3)
3 g Ekraar - Cape Win - Mick Dee - pictured below between trials; was without gate speed and became detached on settling by four lengths behind the second last horse. But, a staying horse he worked home nicely against the rail, making up ground, and kept going into the back straight.
