Te Akau Te Rapa Labour Monday Preview
28 October, 2019
Te Akau New Zealand has seven horses racing on Labour Day (Monday 28 October) at Te Rapa.
Weather: fine, track: Dead5, rail: out 2 metres. 5mls rain forecast Monday.
12.40 p.m. R1 1 Mazzuro (5 g Rip Van Winkle - Mini Pearl) - Michael McNab; improved second-up in the Rating 72 2200 metres on 5 October at Hastings, and drops in grade for the $22,500 Rating 65 2100 metres. He could continue on an upward plane if appreciative of the course at his first attempt. Fixed odds: $5.00 & $2.00.
1.15 p.m. R2 5 Man Oh Man (4 g Reliable Man - Lumir) - Opie Bosson; resumed with a notable effort off a wide run for sixth here in the Maiden 1400 metres on 25 September and steps up in the $15,000 Maiden 1600 metres. Progeny by the sire are going well at present and a good draw (5) helps rate him a top five chance. Fixed odds: $14.00 & $4.00.
2.25 p.m. R4 1 In A Twinkling (4 g Fastnet Rock - Moment in Time) - Opie Bosson; is third-up from a spell in the $30,000 Rating 82 2100 metres. Beaten a nostril in the NZ Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) before finishing fifth in both the Tulloch Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m) at Rosehill, and ATC Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) at Randwick, his rating (84) and weight (61kgs) makes it tough. But he has the ability to be competitive. Fixed odds: $9.00 & $3.00.
3.35 p.m. R6 15 Ristretto (4 m Makfi - Espresso Cavallo) - Michael McNab; raced too keenly in front when resuming here on 25 September in the Rating 65 1200 metres and able to settled with cover from barrier one should see an improved performance in the $22,500 Rating 65 1200 metres. Fixed odds: $19.00 & $4.80.
4.10 p.m. R7 1 Equinox (3 c Exceed and Excel - Our Ella Belle) - Opie Bosson; finished second to Catalyst (Darci Brahma) when resuming in the El Roca - Sir Colin Meads Trophy (Listed, 1200m) at Hastings, and got the job done despite testing track conditions in the 3YO 1215 metres last Saturday at Rotorua. Better footing, three wins from six starts, and ideally drawn (2), warrants his favouritism in the $100,000 James and Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr. 2, 1400m). Fixed odds: $2.40 & $1.35.
4.45 p.m. R8 13 Swing Note (5 m Encosta De Lago - Andallthatjazz) - Chelsea Burdan (a3); produced a thrilling victory in the Spring Classic (Listed, 2000m) last October at Riccarton, during a campaign that saw her win three times from five starts. She did everything asked of her when trialling on 23 September at Cambridge, and resumes off a lengthy spell in the $35,000 Open 1600 metres. Drawn barrier one, she has the ability to act fresh and aided by weight relief to 51kgs. Fixed odds: $31.00 & $7.00.
5.25 p.m. R9 4 Savy Yong Blonk (4 m Savabeel - Ampin) - Chelsea Burdan (a3); ran the fastest final 600m (34.7) for fourth when resuming in the Rating 82 1400 metres on 14 September at Ruakaka, and finished third on slow ground in the Rating 82 1600 metres on 6 October at Te Teko. Third in the Sunline Vase (Gr. 3, 2100m), with notable efforts in the Desert Gold Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m), Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (Gr. 2, 2000m), and NZ Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m) last season, she has the class to perform admirably in the $25,000 Rating 72 1600 metres. Barrier three and weight relief to 56kgs is ideal. Fixed odds: $10.00 & $3.30.
