Te Akau Te Rapa Saturday Preview

Te Akau Racing has five horses entered on Saturday 27 August at Te Rapa.

Weather: overcast, track: Heavy10, rail: true. 3mls rain forecast Friday and no rain Saturday.

12:50 p.m. R1 4 Bubbles Await (3 g Almanzor - Champagne Katie) - Kozzi Asano; came from clear last for fifth to stable-mate Stonybreck (Tavistock) when debuting in the Maiden 970 metres on 3 August at Cambridge (poly-track). By the Champion First Season Sire, his dam Champagne Katie (Darci Brahma) won twice to 1400 metres, was stakes' performed, and placed twice on heavy tracks. He shapes to race well from barrier one in the $15,000 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres if appreciative of footing - one of a Te Akau trio in the event. Fixed odds: $11.00 & $3.50.

12:50 p.m. R1 5 Wild Night (3 g Vanbrugh - Supreme) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); quickened well to win at the trials here on 4 August, given Heavy8 footing, beating home stable-mate and subsequent debut winner Cognito (So You Think). He has looked smart through trials' stage, is a half-brother to Group Two winner and Karaka Million 2YO runner-up Play That Song (Showcasing) and debuts in the $15,000 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres. He has however drawn wide (13) but look for him getting home solidly. Fixed odds: $5.00 & $2.00.

12:50 p.m. R1 11 Treaty of Paris (3 c Tavistock - Echezeaux) - Opie Bosson; spelled after debuting here in April, posted two second placings in recent trials on heavy footing, and resumes in the $15,000 Maiden 3YO 1200 metres. Te Akau trained his dam Echezeaux (Encosta de Lago), who was the stakes' placed winner of four races from 1600m - 2100m, and this is the family of David Ellis-purchased Darci Brahma (Danehill) and Burgundy (Redoute's Choice). He is ideally drawn (3), but much depends on how he handles the heavy going at race pace. Fixed odds: $7.00 & $2.50.

3:08 p.m. R5 4 Soprano Supreme (5 m Contributer - Falsetto) - Opie Bosson; came of age winning three of her previous four starts before a terrific effort for second in the Gold Coast Cup (2400m), and returned home in May after contesting the Premier's Cup (Gr. 3, 2400m). She closed with a strong finish for third in a trial on 16 August at Avondale, and resumes in the $30,000 Rating 75 1400 metres. A winner from 1600m - 2200m on reasonable footing, she has drawn wide (13) but look for her getting home solidly. Fixed odds: $7.50 & $2.70.

3:44 p.m. R6 11 Imperatriz (4 m I Am Invincible - Berimbau) - Opie Bosson; resumed with a strong winning performance in the Open 1100 metres on 6 August at Ruakaka, and steps up in the $120,000 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate (Gr. 2, 1200m). Winning the last four in a row, including the Levin Classic (Gr. 1, 1600m) and NZ Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m) here, she is unbeaten on the course, is suited by the weight-for-age scale, and warrants favouritism despite some reservations about the heavy track. Fixed odds: $1.90 & $1.25.
