Te Akau Team Member of the Quarter

Te Akau is proud to recognise our latest Team Member of the Quarter - Amit Gujar - Te Akau Racing track work rider and stablehand!

“Amit is a good young man, based with Hunter (Durrant) and Laura (Macnab) at the Unibarn,” said trainer Jamie Richards.

“He's good with his times when riding gallops and a pleasure to have on the team. He's part of a good crew of international workers that we employ. They work hard and love the opportunity to grow and learn in this country and Amit is a great example of that ethic.”

Amit comes from the city of Pune, near the West Coast of central India, with a population of 3.1 million (seventh biggest in India) where the temperature averages 20 - 28 degrees. Pune is known for the grand Aga Khan Palace, now a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. Racquet sports badminton and tennis are dominant as also is cricket.

The Royal Western India Turf Club, one of the oldest in India, is based in Pune, with a membership of 10,000 and it stages has around 70 race meetings per year on a 2400-metre turf track rated among the best in Asia. Approximately 1400 horses are trained there.

Experienced Te Akau track work rider Sumeet Pillay recommended Amit, along with Roushan Khan and Niranjan Parmar (Te Akau apprentice). They previously worked in a stable together in Pune, and now occupy a staff house at the stables in Matamata.

“Jamie (Richards) values the people who work for Te Akau, and we are all learning more,” Amit said. “He has taught me the importance of getting times right when riding work and gallops, getting horses to change legs correctly, and being able to ride horses with Hunter (Durrant) has taught me a lot. They are all very kind, the people I work with, and I like everyone.

“Hunter is a very good friend to me and all the boys in the staff house. We are very lucky to be given this opportunity with such beautiful horses (Amit & Hunter pictured below).

“My favourite horse in the stable at the moment is The Perfect Pink (Savabeel). I enjoy riding her work and she is very laidback. I also liked Duby (Ocean Park) when she was in the stable and strapped her when she won at Cambridge (photo attached).

“Riding gallops and taking horses to the races is my favourite thing to do, but I enjoy all the work we have to do with the horses. I am treated with great respect and I love being part of Te Akau.”

David and Karyn developed the Te Akau Team Member Award to recognise amazing people who are passionate and committed to Te Akau - the winner each quarter receives a cash bonus.
