Te Akau Thursday Update

I must admit I was pretty excited to see our Savabeel/Make a Wish colt win at the trials this week. It is hard to describe how rewarding it feels to spend eight weeks looking at yearlings, then selling shares in them to our friends and then seeing such an encouraging start to their careers. It really is a great feeling. No Limits (as this colt is now named - main picture) is one of three colts I purchased from Karaka for our 2019 stallion syndicate.
One of the other colts, a Written Tycoon colt has also won his only trial and was spelled for two weeks after his trial just like No Limits who is in the spelling paddock at Te Akau Stud now. He is called Press Baron and he is such a happy horse and everybody who has anything to do with him just loves him.
Our two year olds are all trialling really well and this week two fillies really caught my eye. A Savabeel/Hopscotch filly called Amarelinha and the Vancouver/Mexican Rose filly known as D'Oro Mexicano. I thought both were very impressive.
It was great to see Jamie win his first race for the season yesterday with Al Haram. Well done to our apprentice Chelsea Burdan who is one of the hardest working young people you would meet. It was Chelsea's first win for the new season, following on from her 10 wins last season.

Straight after the race he was on the plane to Sydney and this morning Jamie was thrilled with how Probabeel and Te Akau Shark had done. They are working at the beach today and tomorrow, James McDonald will gallop them both at Randwick.

I always enjoy the three day carnival at Hawkes Bay which starts this Saturday. It's fantastic to have Group One racing on the programme again and it is great that the Weigh In programme is back this Sunday to review all of the key races.
Unfortunately Melody Belle has drawn out at barrier 15 which is far from ideal but she is a tough mare - as we saw winning five Group 1's and a Group 2 last season - and she will be in fighting form for Michael McNab.
Yesterday we had our first day docking on the farm and I am thrilled with how the stock are doing. Yesterday we docked 351 lambs from just 212 five year old ewes - that is just outstanding.

After seven mls of heavy rain this morning, it is now a fine day so the grass is growing, the days are getting longer and it is the first day of spring on Sunday.
Good luck to all our owners on Saturday and GO THE TANGERINE!
