Te Akau Thursday Update

I hope you all had a very happy Christmas! Karyn and I had a marvellous day with our children and grandchildren. It is not often that we are all together under the same roof, so it was a very special day for us.

On Boxing Day, we were all able to attend the races at Ellerslie.  Auckland Thoroughbred Racing did a great job considering the difficult and unusual circumstances surrounding Covid restrictions. The track was in amazing condition and the Tangerine Team proved to be on fire with our results!

Te Akau won five races on Boxing Day, four of which were at Ellerslie - three of them were stakes' races too!!

It was thrill for Karyn and me to breed the winner of the Group 2 Jamieson Park Eight Carat Classic 3YO race, Belle En Rouge.  She now leads the NZB Filly of the Year Series.  In fact Te Akau trained fillies fill the first four spots!

Over 18 months ago, we sold all the yearlings that we had purchased, and Karyn had several owners who missed being involved who were still wanting to invest. So Karyn asked me to pick out some really nice homebreds to offer to our owners - and Belle En Rouge, a Burgundy filly out of Cavendish Belle, was one.

This filly has gone from strength to strength. Just this preparation, she has placed in the Group 1 1000 Guineas, won a Group 3 race on her way 'back home', and now she has taken out a prestigious Group 2 at Ellerslie. This filly can only improve from here and has a very exciting future ahead of her.

It was also a massive thrill to see On The Bubbles back to his winning form after a decent spell. ‘Bolli' (as he is known around the stable)  took out the Listed Shaw's Wire Ropes Uncle Remus Stakes. This race has been incredibly lucky for Te Akau over the years, she have won this race several times! ‘Bolli' is another horse who also has a very exciting future ahead of him. He has now won almost $800,000 in stakes in just 12 months and I bought him for only $90,000.

Julia-Rose and her husband Hamish Hayes both have a share in On The Bubbles and after his win, I can let you know that they were ‘on the bubbles' all night long!

What a thrill it was to quinella the Listed Hallmark Stud Handicap with two top class mares - Festivity and Vamos Bebe. And that wasn't the only quinella for Te Akau Racing on Boxing Day. We had two stand out 2YO's kick off the winning streak at the beginning of the dayN a filly called Grace ‘N' Grey and a colt called Dynastic. Both of these 2YO's were purchased by me at the Karaka Sale, so you know what that means - both are going to be very good chances at the Karaka Million in three weeks time.

We are going to possibly have five or six entries in this two year old race, which is very exciting!  Currently we have five of the top ten in order of entry.

So far this season, Te Akau Racing has won 51 races (of which 13 are Group/Listed races) and $2.4 million in prize money, twice that of any other stable.  How proud are we of the team?!

Karyn and I are really looking forward to New Year's Day racing at Ellerslie - won't it be fun to have a normal race meeting at Ellerslie again? We have a strong team for this day, including I Choose You (main picture) in the Group 2 Eclipse Stakes won in January 2021 by Imperatriz. She will be ridden by Opie Bosson who is only carrying 54.5kgs - now that tells us something! We are also looking forward to seeing Entriviere running in the Railway, again with Opie aboard, as she defends Avantage's 2021 Railway crown.

As you may know, Opie has worked for Te Akau since he was 14 years old and I don't think he has ever ridden better than he is at present - he is in the zone!!!

All my spare time at present is being spent studying the catalogue for the Magic Millions Sale, which starts in ten days. This is the sale from where I purchased debut stakes' winner Bright Blue Sky and Saturday's Eclipse runner I Choose You.  Mark Walker, who is currently quarantining in Sydney, will be driving up the Gold Coast on Friday and will be inspecting horses for Te Akau next week. If you would like to invest with us, please give me a call. So many people missed out on horses from the Ready to Run sale, so now is your opportunity to get in front of the queue! Contact me now and we can guarantee a share for you.

Karyn and I would like to wish all of our owners and supporters a prosperous start to the New Year and the best of luck for our runners on the first day of 2022!
