Te Akau Thursday Update

David writes:

Yesterday I went to the Cambridge Jockey Club's meeting at Te Rapa which was my first real outing since leaving hospital.  It was great to see so many friends again and even though it was a low key Wednesday meeting in July, there was still much to be excited about.

I clearly remember around five years ago saying on this website what a great future Darci Brahma had at stud - and yes I heard all the sceptics saying he had little feet, he had this and he had that, and he wouldn't make it, he wouldn't make it in Hong Kong, he wouldn't make it in Singapore, he wouldn't make it in Australia and wouldn't leave winners in New Zealand - full stop.

But I advised everyone who had a mare to send a mare to Darci Brahma - well if anybody is still not sure on whether Darci is going to be a great sire or not - have a look at three races in particular:

1.      Super Easy - reigning Singapore Horse of the Year winning the Group 1 Patron's Bowl in Singapore on Sunday night.  This horse has now been retired from racing and will stand at stud this season.

2.      Then just two races later another Darci Brahma put together what I thought was the performance of the night in Singapore, coming from well back in the field and getting up to win on the line and out of his class too.  This 3YO is called OM and is a half brother to Better Than Ever and is raced by Sir Owen Glenn and trained by Te Akau's Mark Walker.

3.      Then yesterday at Te Rapa, I was just blown away by Cauthen, another by Darci - this horse won a 2YO race at Te Rapa by 8.5 lengths and looks on target to go to Australia for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.

4.      Of course yet another Darci Brahma - the Group 1 Manawatu Sires' winning filly Recite - is also going to Melbourne for a tilt at the Group 1 1000 Guineas at Caulfield.

This is all on top of last Saturday when three different Darci's won at Ruakaka - he is unstoppable.

So to all the baggers and critics, I hope you are eating humble pie.

I am going to make another prediction about a horse destined for stallion success and that is Darci Brahma's three quarter brother Burgundy.  This magnificent looking stallion has everything that it takes to really make the grade in the breeding barn.  Karyn and I are certainly sending every available mare we have to him and I can guarantee one thing - I will be trying to buy Burgundy yearlings at the yearling sales for sure.  As I said before, he is the fastest horse that Te Akau has trained, he possesses a beautiful temperament and he probably has the best pedigree of any horse standing at stud in New Zealand.

Today we have owners coming to the farm to see horses and I am pleased to report it is a nice fine day for a change!
