TE AKAU TV - Behind the scenes at Te Akau Stud

TE AKAU TV IS BACK and we are taking you behind the scenes at Te Akau Stud whilst we break in our 2015 yearlings!

Te Akau Racing is proud to oversee every stage of a young horse’s development. Under the careful guidance of our Head Breaker James Jackson the breaking in process is undertaken at Te Akau Stud. James is a renowned equestrian and brilliant horseman in his own right, a world class rider who has broken in horses such as Darci Brahma for us.

This early education is a vital part of developing a young horse into a racehorse of the future – everything is managed meticulously, working with the individuality of each yearling. From the early stages of being driven and learning to wear the required gear and saddlery, right through to being ridden, each stage is taken with precision and care – your young horses could not be in better hands.

Once they have finished their breaking in, the youngsters head in to our main stable at Matamata where they continue their further learning under the watchful eye of our Group 1 winning trainer Stephen Autridge and his training partner Jamie Richards. At Matamata, skills learned include adjusting to the daily routine of stable life, going to and from the track, learning to swim in the pool and of course other critical lessons such as barrier skills – loading in, standing in and jumping out of barriers.

There is much for a young horse to take in so after that, they usually return back to Te Akau for a well-earned break. It is a very exciting time of a young horse’s development as we start to unearth their potential – we hope you enjoy these scenes taken this week for you!
