Te Akau TV - It's A Wild Weekend
Date: 23 Nov 2024
The momentum towards summer racing continues to build, with Black Type action heating up week after week!
It’s another edition of Te Akau TV, and we’re thrilled to bring you all the latest news, updates, and successes from the past week, while looking forward to what’s ahead!
This week has been buzzing with action, both on and off the track. At the Ready to Run Sale, we celebrated securing the sale topper - a remarkable addition to Team Te Akau.
The standout moment came when Lot 174, a colt by I Am Invincible out of dual Group 1 winning mare Shillelagh, entered the ring. With his commanding presence and a lightning-fast breeze-up (9.97 seconds), the colt was the star of the sale and sold out within five minutes of the gavel going down - his sale creating a new Southern Hemisphere record. In total, the team purchased 10 horses, ranging from the sale topper to a $75,000 value purchase - highlighting Te Akau’s commitment to providing ownership opportunities at every level. We were totally CAPTURED by last week’s success! The Tangerine Army shone once again with a stellar lineup of winners.
At Riccarton on the final day of the Cup Carnival, Captured By Love delivered a memorable performance to claim the prestigious Group 1 Barneswood Farm 52nd New Zealand 1000 Guineas, showcasing her class in a dominant win with Australian Group 1 jockey Joshua Parr aboard. A week after her stakes' victory in the Listed Metropolitan, Mehzebeen continued her exceptional form by claiming the Group 3 Martin Collins New Zealand Cup in superb fashion. Malmaison was also on song, making it three on the programme for the team.
To continue a week of winning, Knowledge Is Power displayed his potential with a strong showing, adding another win to our season tally in New Zealand which currently stands at 54 wins for the season. We have now won over $2.3 million in prize money in New Zealand alone for our owners - over $1.3 million ahead of the next stable. Importantly, our strike rate of 4.46 underlines just what a wonderful job our team is doing training and placing our horses.
This weekend promises thrilling action, with key races on both sides of the Tasman.
At Pukekohe Park we’ll see headliners:
- To Bravery Born and Return To Conquer contest the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes
- Cognito and Qali Al Farrasha compete in the Group 3 TAB Counties Cup
- The powerful G1 girl Campionessa returning to defend her Group 2 Dunstan Horsefeeds Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes title
In Wanganui we have a strong team of six runners including Discretion Rules who won the Listed Champagne Stakes at Riccarton last preparation.
In Australia, we’re gearing up for the A$500,000 Listed Cranbourne Cup, where crowd favourite Wild Night (now racing as It’s A Wild Night) will look to add another stakes' victory to his record. He will be ridden by Victoria's Champion Jockey Blake Shinn and all reports confirm that 'Morrie' (as we know him) has settled into his new surroundings beautifully. Savoir Faire is also set to line up on Saturday, then on Sunday racing in Victoria continues with runners at at Kilmore. All signs point to another weekend of thrilling results and unforgettable performances!
Looking ahead, make sure to mark your calendars for another exciting week as we head to Ellerslie and Wanganui for more top-tier racing.
Best of luck to all our owners and connections this weekend! We’re loving this time of year and can’t wait to share an exciting summer racing season with you. Go the Tangerine!
