Te Akau Wairoa Preview
21 February, 2019
Te Akau New Zealand has six horses racing on Thursday 21 February at Wairoa.
As on Tuesday 19 the conditions were: fine and Dead5, rail true. No rain forecast.
1.02 p.m. R1 7 Pokuru's Gift(3 g Rock ‘n' Pop - Pokuru Boxer) - Rosie Myers; finished close up for the minors (fifth) when debuting in the Maiden 3YO 1200 metres on 6 February at Tauranga, and contests the $10,000 Maiden 1200 metres. Barrier one ensures a cushy trip and he can improve to rate an each way chance.
1.37 p.m. R2 3 Griffin(4 g Iffraaj - Double Elle) - Chelsea Burdan (a4); resumed on a bright note, with Burdan aboard, winning the Rating 65 1200 metres in December at Taupo, and under the same rider fought hard for second in a tight finish to the Rating 72 1400 metres on 3 February at Matamata. Drawn well (3) and claiming to 54kgs, he again rates a good chance in a field of five for the $12,000 Rating 72 1300 metres.
2.12 p.m. R3 2 Miss Scandinavia(4 m Smart Missile - Miss Helsinki) - Chelsea Burdan (a4); resumed with a win during her spring campaign down South and continued solid form in the next grade with two seconds and a third from as many starts. Two quiet trials have her ready to resume in the $10,000 Rating 65 1200 metres and with weight relief to 54kgs she rates a top three chance from barrier two.
3.22 p.m. R5 7 Wide Awake(5 g Savabeel - Kay's Awake) - Chelsea Burdan (a4); had a nice hit out on Sunday at Gisborne, running home equal fastest 600m (35.4) in the Poverty Bay Cup (Rating 82 1600 metres), with Burdan aboard, and should appreciated increased distance in the $15,000 Wairoa Business Supporters Cup Trial (Open 1900 metres). The race brings a couple of newcomers from strong races, but he should go well from barrier four with 50kgs.
4.37 p.m. R7 4 Rock Idol(4 g Rock ‘N' Pop - Edesia) - Craig Grylls; fought solidly for fifth when resuming in the Maiden 2YO & Up 1200 metres on Sunday at Gisborne, with Grylls aboard, and any benefit from the run would rate him a top four chance from barrier four in the $10,000 Maiden 1400 metres.
5.12 p.m. R8 1 Lord High Spirit(6 g High Chaparral - Azumi) - Craig Grylls; resumed with a solid finish for third to subsequent Avondale Guineas (Gr. 2, 2100m) fourth placed Bobby Dee (Zed) in the Rating 65 1400 metres on 28 January at Te Teko. Stakes placed in the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Gr. 3, 1600m) before an unsuccessful stint in Hong Kong, he appears to be enjoying the training environment and rates an each way chance despite carrying top weight (60kgs) in the $10,000 Rating 65 1400 metres.
