The Te Akau Tangerine Flies in Ireland
6 April, 2017
Huge excitement overnight as the David Ellis purchased Torcedor romped home fresh up at Leopardstown in Ireland by 5.5 lengths.
Racing for new trainer Jessica Harrington, who is fresh from winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup and has one of the best strike rates in the business right now in Ireland, the son of Fastnet Rock blitzed a small but select field of gallopers, including the two favourites who were more highly rated than him.
It's a great story - David decided be wanted to buy a colt at the world famous Deauville Sale in France and the one he loved was Lot 1 - so he went early and, as we have seen David do so often, his early confidence collected the spoils - just 70,000 euros for the colt - whose mother Magnolia Lane is a full sister to the incredible 4-time winner of the Ascot Gold Cup Yeats.
Already a stakes' winner, Torcedor jumped brilliantly and was superbly ridden by Colm O'Donoghue - the Irish media reporting ...
"well to lead until soon joined and headed, 2nd halfway, regained narrow advantage over 4f out, pushed clear into straight, soon ridden and stayed on strongly inside final furlong where in command, easily"
and
"Torcedor shocked Forgotten Rules and Twilight Payment in the Spin 1038 Race - Weld's Forgotten Rules - winner of the Long Distance Cup at Ascot in 2014 - was quickly to the head of affairs under Smullen, but the Harrington-trained Torcedor kept him company and it became apparent rounding the bend the odds-on favourite would have a fight on his hands. The 8-1 shot proceeded to rocket up the straight, going quickly clear in the hands of Colm O'Donoghue and ultimately being full value for a five-and-a-half-length call over Royal Ascot third Twilight Payment."

Torcedor is raced by Sir Peter Vela, Sir Patrick Hogan, Mohammed Moussa and Laurie Laxon and is managed by David Ellis.
We are very proud that the tangerine has been winning in New Zealand, Singapore, Australia and Ireland in the past three weeks - and all with horses selected and bought by David.
