Three Cheers Vincere

Deserved of victory, grey mare Vincere (4 m Pins - Lasting Luck, by Iglesia) delivered at her fourth start in the $10,000 Maiden 1400 metres on 3 December at New Plymouth.

Off a wide gate (11), Vincere found a midfield position with cover as the field tracked away from the rail on Slow8 footing. She ranged on the leaders turning for home, with rider Danielle Johnson sitting quietly, and came clear inside the 200m to score easily by two and three-quarter lengths.

In the race sponsored by Myers Family Appreciation, Vincere won as a favourite should. She paid $2.70 & $1.50 on the TAB tote and ran the 1400 metres, given slow ground, in a solid 1:25.3.

“She's had a few issues along the way with her feet and joints, so we've had to be patient and it's great to see her win like that,” said leading trainer Jamie Richards. “It's a slower maturing family and she's needed time, but, importantly, she's got some ability, won with authority, and hopefully manages the step up grade.

“I liked the way she pinned her ears back in getting away from the field - always a good sign.

“The team at the Middle Barn have done a good job with her, and farriers Kim Hughes and Gareth Allis have done a lot of good work on her feet and got them right.”

After looking good through the trials stage, Vincere ran the fastest last 600m (35.5) when getting home for third on debut in the Maiden 1100 metres on 19 August at Taupo, freshened in September, and made good ground for second when resuming in the Maiden 1200 metres on 15 November at Waverley.

From one of the last crops of Champion Sire Pins (Snippets), a Waikato Stud stalwart that has sired 136 stakes winners, including 19 Group 1, her dam, Lasting Luck won five times (twice on slow footing) to 1200 metres in Australia, and Vincere became her fifth individual winner.

Owned by David and Hamish Coleman, Vincere was purchased by David Ellis CNZM for $115,000 at the 2018 Karaka Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Waikato Stud.

“I thought she was a really good value filly at the yearling sales,” Ellis said. “I bought her to syndicate and David Coleman, who has been a very good friend of mine for 45 years, rang me at the sales and said he wanted to buy a nice filly.

“I recommended her, and he and his son Hamish bought her. She was bred by Angelique Bridson and Kerrie Cox, who is the Bloodstock Manager at Waikato Stud and one of the best at her job anywhere in the world.

“I was thrilled not only for the owners, but also for the two top ladies who bred the filly.

Vincere was strapped by Reece Trumper.
