Two from Two

Having done the job nicely on debut, Enhance (3 f Saperavi - Pinstinct, by Pins) made it two from two when putting away her three rivals in the Waharoa Livestock 3YO 1200 metres on Saturday Oct. 12 at Matamata.

Enhance had won on footing upgraded from Slow8 to Slow7, over 1200 metres in 1:13.01, at Te Rapa, and given a month between races she clocked 1:14.50 on Slow9.

After sitting pat, as Miss Mossman (Mossman) and Connor John (Volksraad) took each other on in front, jockey Matt Cameron produced Enhance to the outside on straightening and she again displayed good acceleration to get away by one and a half lengths.

“She was a bit flat towards the turn, but guts it out and showed a nice turn of foot,” said Cameron. “She was a touch green but once I gave her a couple of backhanders she really extended. She didn't do anything until I asked her and she really hit the line.

Trainer Jason Bridgman remained circumspect of immediate plans for Enhance.

“I don't think she is up to the best fillies right now,” said Bridgman. “Although, I think she is a promising filly and probably doesn't want fast ground as she continues to go through a few developmental changes. We'll see how she comes through this before making further plans.

“She may get a freshen-up at some point and whether we look at another race will be decided, but she certainly looks as though she deserves a shot at stakes racing at some point.

Enhance is the pride and joy of Karyn Fenton-Ellis, an integral part of the Te Akau team, who bred and owns the filly.

The dam of Enhance, Pinstinct, from the Oregon mare Oregon Express, was a winner when trained by Mark Walker.

“Pinstinct was raced by the late Kim Lee and he gave her to me when she retired from racing,” said Fenton-Ellis. “I raced her earlier foal, The Looker, with my daughter Lydia, who Jason (Bridgman) trained to win and Pinstinct is in foal to Minstrel Court and going to Burgundy once she foals.

“It was such a joy to see her win today although I could not be too exuberant as I was working on Trackside so the my profession must come first - needless to say, privately I was ecstatic!!”
