Vicenza - Tough Victory

A filly that has done nothing wrong, Vicenza (3 f Sacred Falls - Tonic, Blues Traveller) made it back-to-back wins on 15 March at Woodville, taking out the $10,000 President's Mile (Rating 65, 1600m).

After trialling well, Vicenza capped two strong finishes when winning the Maiden 1400 metres with plenty of authority on 20 February at Wairoa, and delivered again in the hands of Ryan Elliot.

After stable-mate Scottish Star (Bullbars) was out-bobbed in a short-head margin defeat, also with Elliot aboard, Vicenza ended on the right side of close finish.

In a race that saw Kozzi Asano unseated from favourite Cinzento (Dalghar) as the gates opened, Elliot emerged with a perfect trail aboard Vicenza, was left a clear pathway on straightening and showed plenty of fight to withstand the challenge of Higher Power (Power) as the pair drew clear of the opposition.

Expected to pose an immediate threat in the next grade, and ideally placed by trainer Jamie Richards, Vicenza paid $4.30 & $1.90 on the NZ TAB tote.

“It was a tough effort by a filly that's improving,” Richards said. “We had the race picked out for her once she won at Wairoa, and Ryan (Elliot) was confident she would handle stepping up to a mile.

“The race panned out well for her. She got a lovely run, cut the corner and kept up a good solid gallop when the other horse came at her. So, what she lacks in size she makes up for in attitude and ticker.

“She might feel the firm ground there today, so we'll give her a let-up and if she continues to strengthen it wouldn't surprise me if she got through to be competitive in the next grade.

“Vicenza is in the uni barn with Shay (Dickinson), and her team have done a good job with this winner and Pazienza (Written Tycoon) last Saturday at Trentham.”

Bred and owned by Paul Ryan (pink & black quartered colours), from the first crop of quadruple Group One winner Sacred Falls (O'Reilly), out of triple stakes winning mare Tonic (Blues Traveller), the near-black filly presented in terrific order again and now the winners of two from five.

Ryan also owned and raced her dam, Tonic, the South Island Filly of the Year in 2003, who was coincidentally ridden in two of her three stakes victories by Paul Richards (father of trainer Jamie Richards). Transferring her race record to become a prolific producer, Tonic has now left six individual winners of 25 races. Vicenza is line bred to both Northern Dancer and Centaine.

The victory provided Richards with his 96thsuccess this season, to lead the premiership by 24, at a strike rate of 4.8 and prize money over $3.7 million. Notable also, 12 of his last 31 runners have won, with five stakes winners including four at Group One level.

Vicenza was strapped by Kate Belsham.

“Kate has been on the road all weekend,” Richards said. “She's done a great job with the horses on Saturday at Trentham, and again today.”
