WATCH: The Journey Begins | Te Akau’s Young Horses In Education
25 May, 2026
Step inside one of the first chapters of a yearling’s journey at Te Akau Racing.
Before the big dance, every young horse has to start somewhere – and Te Akau recently caught up with Assistant Trainer Reece Trumper to take a closer look at the early education process for our new season yearlings, and why this quiet, foundational stage might just be one of the most important parts of all.
Our young horses arrive at Te Akau having never experienced anything quite like this before. It is their first introduction to a racetrack environment – new sights, new sounds, new people, and new routines – and the only thing asked of them in these early stages is to learn at their own pace.
Because the first job is not training. It is trust.
It is showing up every single day, being consistent, remaining calm, and allowing each horse the opportunity to find confidence within the Te Akau environment while learning the ropes of stable life.
From there, everything builds gradually. Daily handling, learning to accept gear, walking in hand, standing quietly, and becoming comfortable within a busy stable environment all form part of the process. These are the small but significant steps that lay the foundation for the biggest possibilities later on.
At Te Akau, early education is never rushed and is always tailored to the individual horse. The stable understands that what happens during these first few months can shape everything that follows throughout a racing career. A horse that learns slowly and surely – both about racing and about themselves – and one that feels safe, relaxed, and understood, is far better prepared for whatever comes next.
Every champion has a first day, and this process is all about giving every yearling in the Te Akau stable the best possible opportunity to put their best hoof forward.
Keep an eye out over the coming weeks as we continue to follow the journeys of the young horses currently making their way through the Te Akau team, with further updates and behind-the-scenes insights still to come on our latest crop of yearlings.
