Win 1 Taupo - Belle En Rouge Beautiful

Ridden positively by Danielle Johnson, Belle En Rouge  (3 f Burgundy - Cavendish Belle, by Thorn Park) raced away to win the $12,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden Fillies & Mares 1300 metres (eligible $11,500 bonus) on 6 October at Taupo.

A great initiative by New Zealand Bloodstock, the NZB Insurance Pearl Series bonus scheme is designed to support fillies and mares racing in New Zealand. Te Akau has good success winning the bonuses, going back to Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner and 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) runner-up Darci's Dream (Darci Brahma) collecting a bonus in 2014 at Taupo.

Overcoming an awkward draw (9), Belle En Rouge travelled comfortably outside the leader before taking over approaching the home turn. Angled wide by Johnson, in search of better going on Slow9 footing, she quickly put the slipper in and went clear to score by nearly three lengths.

Following a very good second on debut in the Maiden 3YO 1200 metres on 3 September at Hawera, and again when fourth in the Maiden 3YO 1200 metres on 22 September at Cambridge (poly-track), Belle En Rouge lengthened in favouritism to return $4.50 & $1.90 on the TAB fixed odds.

“She'd been knocking on the door and it was a good win,” said trainer Jamie Richards. “She ran very well at Hawera, in a small field that I think will end up being a good form race.

“She got a bit lost across the top on the poly-track last time, when receiving some kick-back, but when she got to the outside she really finished off well.

“We were keen to be positive from the barrier today and I felt the track might be better out wider. She was well ridden by Danielle (Johnson) and well managed at the Main Stable by Tracy (Collis) and Trevor (Stewart) where they've done a good job with her.

“She's always been a nice filly and just required a bit of time to strengthen up. Hopefully she can go on with it.”

Owned by Te Akau Beautiful in Red Racing Partnership (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM), Belle En Rouge was bred by David Ellis CNZM & Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM.

Her sire, Burgundy (Redoute's Choice), purchased as a yearling by Ellis, won five stakes' races before standing at stud and having his first three two-year-olds to race win on debut.

Out of a Thorn Park mare, Belle En Rouge is from the family of smart gallopers Filante Etoile (Soviet Star), Valbuena (Darci Brahma), and Star Dancer (Starwatch).

“We bred her here at the farm and after breaking-in we put together a nice syndicate to race her,” Ellis said. “She always looked a standout type to me, since the day she was born, and deserved a breakthrough after a couple of really good efforts.

“Danielle rode her well and the filly was particularly dominant in the straight. She actually had her first trial at Taupo and Burgundy, who we bought and trained, won his first two races on the course at Taupo.

“Not many of the horses that we buy handle these testing slow and heavy tracks, and our team goes a lot better on top of the ground, but she's managed to cope and looks a nice filly to go with.

“It's a real team effort, by those that break-in the horses here at Te Akau Stud and the team at Matamata. They've all been working so hard in the past few months and it's good to get some rewards for everyone.”
