Win 70 for Mark Walker
7 December, 2013
Clermont Club - a 4YO gelding by Casino Prince out of Razzle - is Te Akau Singapore trainer Mark Walker's latest Kranji winner, saluting the judge at just his third Singapore start on Friday night.
In winning, Clermont Club becomes Mark's 70th winner for the season - a remarkable achievement - and Mark now lies second on the Trainers' Premiership - only four wins behind many time Singapore Champion trainer Laurie Laxon.
When you remember that Mark has trained 89 runners up this season and 79 third placegetters - he could well be in front!
The horse we know as "Raz" was purchased by David Ellis for $165,000 from the 2011 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale and has taken some time, benefiting from a patient Te Akau and owner approach to his racing career.
Clermont Club made his raceday debut in Singapore on 8 November and his creditable run for fourth provided plenty of optimism for a successful racing future. At his next start, not a lot went his way but he still fought on bravely for sixth. Both of those races were over 1200m and the step up to a favourable 1600m always looked to be a plus.
Start number three on Friday night saw top Australian jockey Corey Brown position "Razz" close to the action in third place and it was only a matter of patient riding which saw him mount his challenge in the home straight and go on to score a narrow but still convincing win.
The decision to send Razz to race in Singapore has proved a smart one with his victory in the S$65,000 Initiation on the polytrack. He has now won $38,317 in his three appearances there - and everything points to more to come from him.
Other horses to perform well for the stable included Single Act and Dreamcatcher who were both runners up in their respective races and Pinyin and Pharma Browne who were third, the latter to Clermont Club.
