Winning Matamata Double - Win 1
16 January, 2015
Te Akau New Zealand trainer Jason Bridgman had a great day at his "home office" today with two of his three starters saluting the judge. Here is the first of them .... Sonsy ...
A maiden no more, Sonsy (3f Thorn Park - Flowing) broke through for a win in just her fourth start on her own stomping ground on Friday in the Prima Park at Karaka Premier Maiden over 1600m in a smart time of 1:34.9. Bred by Jonny Orr and raced by a syndicate of family and friends, Sonsy went out second favourite after a luckless run last start at Taranaki.
In a bold ride by Matthew Cameron, he settled her nicely in the running and left nothing to chance as he angled her in the clear on straightening. Once in front, she showed her true ability by keeping up a solid effort to the line to win by a neck over Aotearower who mounted a strong challenge the final 200m.
“I was a bit worried behind the gates when she was really on her toes but I knew she wasn't fizzed up, she is just very well at the moment,†commented Matthew after the race.
"Once the gates opened, she was a total professional and I'm glad she got the job done today. It was a big effort.â€
Trainer Jason Bridgman said after the race:
“This was an excellent result today for her breeder and syndicate. She had a luckless run last start so it was good to get the win under her belt today. It was a good strong win given the strength of the field and the smart time she recorded.
“We have always had a high opinion of this filly and I couldn't be more pleased for her and the owners. She looks like will improve with a step up in distance and that is likely what we will do at her next start.â€
Sonsy's dam Flowing (Straight Strike - Floral Scent) was luckless in ten starts when trained by racing scribe Dennis Ryan who was on course to witness the win. Now retired from the breeding shed, Sonsy is the last foal from Flowing.
