Winning Pukekohe Treble - Win No.1 Magic

Combining for the first time with stable rider Opie Bosson, Midnight Special (4 m Excelebration - Midnight Van Damme, by Van Nistelrooy) recorded a dominant victory in the $15,000 Badgemakers Maiden 1200 metres on 23 February at Pukekohe.

At times her own worst enemy when tending to over race, Midnight Special had settled last before posting the fastest last 600m (34.2) for fifth in a Maiden 1200 metres on 30 January at Ellerslie, form which entitled her favouritism.

Chasing a genuine pace which aided her prospects and after striding to lead at the 300m mark, she stretched out to put the win beyond doubt by one and a half lengths.

After running very well for second on debut in a Maiden 1200 metres on 29 October at Hawera, to breaking through at her sixth start, Midnight Special has always appeared on the verge and shapes as likely to progress further.

On footing upgraded to Good3 before race one, following trial by four Te Akau stakes horses (won by Sword of State (Snitzel)), Midnight Special ran 1200 metres in slick 1:09.2 and paid $3.80 & $1.30 on NZ TAB tote.

“The mare had been going well after getting back in her races and we had a bit of trouble with her over racing, but she's slowly been improving at her last couple of starts and she was given a lovely ride by Opie (Bosson),” said trainer Jamie Richards, notching his fourth win from previous six runners.

“She was able to race on speed from a good barrier (5) and that made the difference really, rather than racing back in the field and being required to make up too much ground.

“It's taken a little while for her to win a Maiden, after appearing it might happen quickly following her first couple of starts.

“She seems to be in a good rhythm now, relaxing in her races, and finishing off. It's been a good effort getting her to this stage by everyone at the Main Stable.

“Up to 1400 metres at her next start in around two or three weeks should be ideal.”

In training for owner/breeder Bill Hurlstone and his sister Judy, she is by Exceed and Excel (Danehill) stallion Excelebration, the sire of 22 stakes' winners, including four Group 1's. Midnight Special is the first foal from Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat) mare Midnight Van Damme, a talented race mare that won three times from 1300m - 2000m and placed eight times. The filly carries strong influence of immortal sire Northern Dancer.

Midnight Special was strapped by Tracy Collis.
